MEETING TO ORDER: President Scott Piper called the meeting to order at 12:35pm. Gary Tomsic gave a touching invocation.
GUESTS AND VISITING ROTARIANS:
Rick Staeb introduced his guest Nancy Harrison from St. Josephs Hospital. Jerry Landcastle introduced Michael Knapp who is the new Chief of Police of Ferndale.

RETURNING ROTARIANS: Doug Thomas has not returned yet.
ANNOUNCMENTS: Next Thursday's program will be presented by our former fellow Rotarian Bruce Brabec. After next Thursdays meeting there will be a special Fundraiser Meeting. Bill Grace announced that the new rosters are out and he asks that you send him any necessary corrections. The new roster will be coming out on July 1, 2006. There is a board meeting next Thursday morning (7:00am) at Zervas Group on Prospect Street. We received a Thank you Card (my apologies as I did not hear from whom?) regarding care packages which were sent to our troops overseas. If anyone knows, please let me know and I will put it in next week's newsletter. A new member was inducted today. Nancy Harrison, the Vice President of Business Development for St. Josephs Hospital has joined our club. Welcome Nancy! She has two children (Katy and Matt) and she likes to golf, hiking and gardening.
HAPPY BUCKS: Ken Richardson gave 5cents for each second left on the clock. He also donated happy bucks for the #1 team⿦the University of Texas. And also was happy that Jack Curnow did not finish 2nd. Maureen Camandona gave a few happy bucks for Nancy's induction, Bills tireless efforts with the Roster, and the fact that the seats at lunch today were virtually full. Debra Wiggs gave happy bucks also for the addition of Nancy to our club and for the condo in Phoenix she has just purchased. Bill Grace was happy to have the new Roster done, that Nancy has joined and that Norm Rauch is back. Brian Finnegan was $5 happy about Nancy's induction and mentioned "we can't wait to put you to work"⿦for Bruce being here and also for four days up at Whistler. Winton Smith was happy that he has money to give away to college students to attend Washington State four year program. $250,000!! George Tsakumis was happy that Bill did such a good job on the Roster. Roger Lehnert, asking the club to turn to page 19 of their Roster, happily pointed out that Tim Carpenter's picture was just lovely, but if the same one is there again next year⿦."it's gonna hurt him bad". Tim Vilhauer was happy to see lot of people at the meeting, welcomed back Norm and Bruce⿦and Rich. He was happy that Rich comes often enough not to wear out his welcome. Rich was able to mention that back surgery kind of does that. Jerry was happy to see new member Nancy Harrison and Norm Rauch's return. He's happy and optimistic for a very good 2006! Kathryn Hilton was $10 happy to see Nancy and other old⿦oops, returning, members. She also thanked Dan Baker for filling in for her for Sergeant in Arms and made the observation that Paul Cooley when observed dealing with his customers has a very calming demeanor and good people skills. Bill Grace thanks Char Hart for her work on the Roster. Rick Staeb was happy that Nancy has joined us and wishes everyone Happy New Year. Paul Cooley was $20 happy⿦just because he's not happy very often (contrary to what Kathryn said) and thanks Bill Grace and welcomed Nancy Harrison. Scott Piper happily congratulated Paul Cooley for jumping out of an airplane at minus 20 degrees (really?!?). Scott Wallace was happy for Norm's return and for his goose hunting trip last week. Max Legg welcomed Nancy and was happy for five days of skiing. Dick Donahue was happy that 24 years ago, Sid Baron sat on the jury for his DUI. Randy Carr was happy for a family ski trip. Tony Cubellis was $62 happy and mentioned that his wife shared the same birthday as Dan Baker. Phill Bratt was Happy to see Sid Baron, the guest speaker, who hired him 20 years ago. Bruce Brabec was happy to be back and thankful that there was a recommendation letter for him to become a member of the Bon Aire club⿦it worked.
FINEMASTER: Randy Carr (now that there is such a thing as painless dentistry⿦is this your outlet!?!) Firstly, Randy volunteered non-present Doug Thomas to match all fines for today. (Guess that's what happens when you're not here to defend yourself, Doug). Jerry Landcastle volunteered $5 to start after which he was fined $2 by Randy for having the good sense to bring a police escort after upsetting certain people in the county. Dick Langabeer was fined $1 for being the last attorney to arrive. Mention was made⿦though no fine imposed today⿦that it would be good to mix up the seating a little more. Roger Lehnert was fined $2 for pretending to the fine master.
Fines Re: The Roster⿦Tim Carpenter was fined for his outdated photo and made mention that Max Legg and Rich Jacobson could stand to update theirs, as well. Randy pointed out that George Tsakumis had a lovely picture of his wife in the roster⿦but also pointed out that there were others who neglected to do so. Bruce was fined $2⿦just because. Ken Richardson was fined for the unrecognizable color of his shirt (though he claims that it was "burnt orange") and Ken volunteered a $5 fine⿦just to help out Doug Thomas. The club members were instructed by our fine master to grab a pen and fill in the missing hair on Dan Parson's goatee. Nancy was fined a $1 welcome fee. Bill grace $1 for not announcing that the bulletin committee was as important as the fine master (?). Rick Staeb did something nice, so was not fined...unless of course he wants to donate. Several people (too many to record) donated fines "to help Doug out".

Called in on short notice by his son Jim Baron, Sid Baron rose to the occasion and gave a wonderful talk about his life, his book, and experienced during the war. Your editor (a struggling, not so young anymore, entrepreneur) was particularly touched by his advice to those who are just starting out in business.
Be Passionate about what you do.
Don't just do it to be rich.
Treat your employees well and with respect.
Treat your customers like they are the most important people in the world.
