At this week's meeting we were joined by Zena Ferguson, Community Development Officer for the Dementia-Friendly Communities Program at Dementia Australia. Dementia Australia supports all people living with dementia, their families and carers; provide trusted information, education and support services; and advocate to the government and in the community for positive change, empowering people to live well with dementia in their community

There are an estimated 43,400 people in WA living with all forms of Dementia - 666 in the local Belmont Community, which is expected to double by 2054. 2 in 3 people with dementia are thought to be living in the community.

Dementia is a progressive disease, but Zena reminded us of the importance of Human connection. A Dementia-Friendly Community is a place where people living with dementia can live a life of purpose, meaning and valueand that people living with dementia are included and can make their own choices.

Many of our members shared stories and experiences of people they know with Dementia - and Zena shared one thing we could all do was to become a Dementia Friend to increase awareness and understanding of dementia: https://www.dementia.org.au/get-involved/dementia-friendly-communities/become-dementia-friend
