Being a Buddy at Handicamp

Sarah, a second year nursing student and Girl Guide leader, set aside her nervousness and took up the challenge of becoming a Buddy for Handicamp this year.  Sarah and other buddies had the opportunity to meet before the campers arrived.  Ashleigh was the camper that Sarah looked after.  They bonded well during the week and formed a close relationship that enabled them to get involved in all sorts of activities throughout the camp.  They included going bowling (despite coming an impressive . . .  last!).  Getting drenched at the zoo because they made the mistake of hustling off to see the elephants before realising that they could have gone on one of the undercover carts that were available to use.  Archery was another activity that they got involved in and persistence paid off as Ashleigh did get the hang of it and had a go at shooting the arrows.

 

Another great Sloan Dinner was held, with this year's theme being 'Mad Hatter".  Ashleigh was a little overcome by all the people there as she hadn't seen so many people in one place before.  But she enjoyed herself and tucked into a great meal that was provided for everyone.

 

With lots of encouragement Ashleigh did enjoy her water biscuit experience and having mastered it, was keen to have a second go at it.  Bingo was another fun experience that was hosted by Ascot Rotary Club members - Joanna and Michelle.  Sarah enjoyed seeing the smile on Ashleigh's face at Adventure World as she tackled the go karts, the less fearful rides, the water slides and the pool. 

 

Friday being the last full day, they packed a lot into it.  The day included having a go at the flying fox, which Ashleigh did; and the abseiling which Ashleigh didn't do - but did enjoy standing at the top of the tower watching others take off (including Sarah); then she quite happily climbed down the steps at the end of the event.

 

Karaoke finished the camp and probably finished Sarah and Ashleigh's singing career as apparently 'Baa baa black sheep' is not a great career making song - they were boo'd off the stage!

 

What really stood out for Sarah was the wonderful people who brought together the buddies and campers to enable them to have a truly memorable experience.  She said that everyone one of the buddies felt touched to have been involved in the experience.  She personally has been re-invigorated and her passion to work with people has been strengthened. 

 

Sarah finished by thanking us for allowing her to be part of the experience.  In return Sarah we need to thank you for your willingness to give it a go and to be an awesome buddy for, not only Ashleigh but for all the other campers who were there too.  Ascot Rotarians together say a big thank you to you, and we all look forward to hearing more from you next year if your schedule allows you to have another go at being a buddy.
