Last week our program was "The Hatching of the International Owl Center".  We had the opportunity to learn about the Houston Nature Center which was built in 2001 and meet Alice the Great Horned Owl.  Alice, who has a wing span of 5 ft, was injuried when she fell out of her nest as a young owl.  Since she was no longer able to live in the wild, she had to "get a job" as an educational bird.  The Houston Nature Center hosts the International Owl Festival and features the World Owl Hall of Fame.  They are currently in the initial phases of starting the International Owl Center which will incorporate the current Nature Center, Owl Hall of Fame, Great Horned Owl Breading Project and have a natural playground.   We also learned that our presenter, Karla Bloem, is the World Authority of Great Horned Owl vocalization.
