- Program: Conversation between David Connelly and George Wickstrom
- George’s favorite president is Harry Truman; David’s is Calvin Coolidge.
- History of Virtues:
- Virtues Project was started in 1990
- Ben Franklin had a friend who pointed out that people were crossing the street to avoid Ben. This friend challenged him to improve himself as a person.
- Benjamin put together 13 virtues that completely changed his life.
- He worked on his character and became a likeable person. He was able to negotiate good partnerships with the French to support the American Revolution.
- Without the 13-Virtue Project we may not be in the country we know today.
- George’s favorite virtues are: Assertiveness and Detachment.
- Assertiveness is important in how you present yourself to people. People know when you are sincere. What do you have to be to be sincere and assertive? You must know your subject and be confident in yourself. You have to be positive and communicate. To be able to do this with confidence means you can be assertive.
- Detachment means you can be listening to someone else, while being able to detach your emotions from a situation and be genuinely appreciative of someone sharing their viewpoint with you.
- David and his daughter go through Virtues weekly and have done this since she was very young. Everyone can learn from Virtues.
- Question: Are virtues and values the same thing? If they are different, how are they different?
- Values are an overall viewpoint, either personal or with a group.
- Virtues are specific to a certain trait.
- The “official answer” from Kymn and the Virtue Project - Values change from time to time, from region to region, family to family, culture to culture. In every continent and every culture, virtues are consistent and agreed upon that they are important.
- Do we know what Ben Franklin did specifically regarding the 13 virtues? Did he journal, pray about them, etc.?
- Unknown, but he did it on a consistent basis. He was a disciplined person.
- We will throw more information on articles of interest and Ben Franklin’s study of Virtues and send it to the club.
- There is a Time Magazine that highlights Benjamin Franklin on the shelves right now!
- The 13 Virtues that Ben Franklin studied are: Temperance, Silence, Order, Resolution, Frugality, Industry, Sincerity, Justice, Moderation, Cleanliness, Tranquility, Chastity, and Humility.
- George is currently working on Purposefulness
- Each one of us has the ability to be the “Power of One”. Being respectful, kind, compassionate…these things can change the lives of others around us.
