Speaker:
Colin Sanders spoke on his A Million Possibilities Solo Ocean Row
He thanked Blake and Petra for inviting him.
He has been been planning the row for two years, and it is not just about him but also his wife Anne and daughter are helping him prepare. It was a family affair.
About two years ago Colin was out biking, and thought he wants to do something epic in my life before it is too late. He can’t climb Mt. Everest because he is useless at altitude and his knees couldn’t take it.
He heard about John Breeden who rowed across Pacific Ocean and started to email him and ended up buying his boat – called Socks II.
Working for a sports wear company he sells socks. Thinking of that, Colin said he has 15,000 socks, which he needs to give away. He plans to bring some to Blake for Kimmirut.
The boat has three sets of oars, is 22 feet long with a water tight sleeping, forward cabin for storage, it is self-righting. He has a survival suit, and life raft, and the boat has dry wells to store the food.
After he bought it, he had refurbished and then had it shipped to a warehouse in the Canary Islands – just off the coast of Morocco. There is a lot to do to get organized in the Canary Islands, luckily someone he knows has cousins there who are helping him out.
The long distance row across the Atlantic is a 5,235.67 km route. He will leave for the Canary Islands on Nov. 17 and begin the row on or about Dec. 1.
The first target to end his row is Barbados but he can only go in the same direction as the wind. If he misses Barbados because of the wind he will head to Antigua.
He will have enough supplies for 90 days at sea but it will likely take less time.
Rower David Clark made it in 82 days, taking his time and enjoyed everyday.
8,000 people have attempted or climbed Everest but less than 30 have made it across the Atlantic.
Colin has been getting ready with a physical trainer to get his almost 64 year body in shape, nutritionist who calculated he will need 6,500 calories a day.
It is so easy to lose weight – he could lose 25 to 30 pounds in what is known as the world’s most expensive diet. He will eat mostly freeze dried foods – energy bars, dried fruit and nuts. He has desalinators to make fresh water.
He has an ocean rowing coach, a weather router and navigation.
Second most asked question Colin asked is why he is doing this? He says he wanted to challenge himself physically, spiritually, financially,  and he choose it because it was hard.
There will be no where to stop on the way, he will be on his own, it is not an organized race. There is an organized race leaving two weeks after him and they are followed by sail boats,
He is working with Community Living Ontario and he has raised $80,000 to date with a goal of $1 milllion, because about million oar strokes. Colin’s son is a client of Community Living.
Local Community Livings will have local paddle and row a thons to raise funds.
He would be happy to accept donations today.
His message is to be bold and aggressive and not afraid to step out of your comfort zone – be prepared to dream big – you will reap the awards.
