Our Guest Speaker today was PDG John Egan who spoke on the Digital Revolution in Photography.
As a practicing photographer for some 25 years he has seen the industry go from film to electronic in very rapid time, and has ridden the wave of change. John explained that really the only thing that has changed is the capture. The rest of the camera controls work in exactly the same way. But the digital signal that replaces film can easily be handled to give some amazing results; results that would have been very time consuming using film, if not impossible.
Original photographs are easily modified to change the feel and even the colour of the image. We were introduced to some imaging programmes, but particularly Picasa which is a free Google programme (app) and very very useful. As well we saw examples from Photoshop which is the most widely used imaging programme used by photographers.
John also explained a few ways to get better shots with a camera phone . These are becoming more and more sophisticated and are actually the most popular cameras in the world are in 'pnones.
John was thanked by PP Paul Murray, who is also a very skillful user of Photoshop.
President John was accompanied by his much talented wife Judy again today. He made a valiant effort to get Michael Knight to sing the Grace, but even Judy would find that a challenge.
As Pres John pointed out, 2015 is a very significant year for Australians, being one hundred years since the landing on Gallipoli.
There were no other visitors to welcome today, but Franzi gave an impromtu report on her experience at Talbingo, skiing (on one ski) wakeboarding and just enjoying life.
There is to be a Polio Plus Theatre Night on February 25th, which should be a great social night, so put that in your diary.
District Conference is coming up soon, March 21st and 22nd. so now is the time tor egister and book a room. PP John Smith has rooms booked so see him soon.Its at Cowra this year so the rooms might be tight. You can register on the District Website. Make sure you go. Its a great weekend and will show you how wide the world of Rotary really is.
PP Graham Burmeister informed the club of his Committee's dissatisfaction with the Scholarship process that is being undertaken by CSU. While this is a problem , he reiterated that the programme should definitely go ahead, and that they the committee would be seeking a better result. We have been offering these Science Scholarships for some 25 years and have had great success. We need this to carry forward.
He also had the very pleasant news that an earlier exchange student Anna Hakestrom came back to Australia for a Christmas with a bit of sun. Anna was with us in 1985 and 86. She came with her husband, two teenaged children, her twin sister and her husband and two teenagers as well, so Burmo had a full house. The younsters had a great time drenching sheep and swimming in the Murrumbidgee.
The Boxing Day races at Tumut will never be the same, with the blue eyed beauties that Burmo introduced dazzling his friends from the footie club!! (I hope Burmo has a more recent photograph. This one is the best we could find of Anna.)
Anna spent some time with her other host families as well, with John and Isabelle Ireland for example hosting them to morning tea. Burmo closed off by asking Franzi to be sure to come back too, when it was her turn to introduce us to her family!!
PP Phil Macintosh showed us a very powerful movie in support of Polio Plus.
Minda Dentler was a polio victim born in India to an extremely poor family. She was adopted at about age 3 and move d to America where with love and care she got her life on track and became a successful business person.
She then began to excel at sports and finally as a crowning effort , competed successfully in the Kona.The inaugural "Hawaiian IRON MAN Triathlon" was conceptualized in 1977 as a way to challenge athletes who had seen success at endurance swim, running and biathlon events. Honolulu-based Navy couple Judy and John Collins proposed combining the three toughest endurance races in Hawai’i—the 2.4-mile Waikiki Roughwater Swim, 112 miles of the Around-O’ahu Bike Race and the 26.2-mile Honolulu Marathon—into one event. Minda cannot walk, and so did most of this with arm power in her specially built wheel chair.
She has become a powerful advocate for Polio Plus. She stated that more than 2 million children are able to walk because of the Rotary inspired Polio Eradication Plan, children who at best would be crippled, and at worst could well be dead.
We are extremely privileged to be part of history, not just witnessing it, but actively in the the team that made it happen!
PP John Smith was warmly congratulated on his new Moonie.
John picked it up from The Gold Coast, and had to storm hop on his way home as there were a great number of thunderstorms around.
Aircraft and Thunderstorms do not mix! New aircraft are arriving fast in Wagga Wagga, with Geoff Hamilton taking delivery of an executive business jet just recently
