President John opened the meeting with his customary twin toasts, and welcomed our guests David Stratton, and Kylie Dowell. David is associated with Burmo at the Riverine Club, and Kylie is our guest speaker.
Franzie is back as well after the School Holidays.
The tragedy unfolding in Nepal has taken us all by surprise, and makes us realise more and more how lucky we are. The District will be doing something about the situation and The District Governor David Kennedy will be letting us know as soon as he can what arrangements have been made. We have just donated ten ShelterBoxes to Vanuatu.

Sergeant Ross rolled in the coins like a true two up playing trooper. After a long saga that resulted in a set of car keys being returned to the owner, he set about relieving cash from anyone who had anything or nothing to do with the Anzac parades. Add to that, he managed to get a crew to sing the second verse of Advance Australia Fair. This because Peter Cozier, even loaded down with medals sang the National Anthem of both Australia and New Zealand with “some conviction!”
These sessions do a lot for the fun and fellowship in the club, and the sergeants do a great job of that.
Our Guest Speaker was introduced by soon to be President Geoff Hamilton. Kylie Dowell is a Work Health and Safety consultant and educator, living in Adelong.
She began by asking us who was involved in any way with any business. Most were. She pointed out that we were all responsible for safety in our businesses. This was not new to most of us, but the heartening fact that everyone is responsible for their workplace is a breath of fresh air. No longer can careless workers expect the boss to take the wrap. Instead the far more sensible approach has been set in place. Once this is gazetted in each state, workers Australia wide will be responsible for pointing out and helping remove hazards. This doesn't mean that management is off the hook. Far from it. But now all have a duty of care.
Ridiculous situations where a worker negligently disobeyed instruction and was still not liable have been addressed.
Kylie also pointed out that if you as an “Other” witness and recognise a hazard you too can be held liable. Spilt milk in a Supermarket calls for you to something about it.
After fielding a few questions from the floor, Kylie was thanked by James Hamilton who had personal experience with safety in the workplace while he worked with the Department of Agriculture.
Rotary Information. We have heard a fair bit about ShelterBox in the last few weeks. It began as a the brainchild of Rotarian Tom Henderson, from the Rotary Club of Herlston-Lizzard in Lands End, Cornwall. He saw vision of survivors of disaster virtually running after trucks in the mud scavenging the bread and rice that was thrown at them. There had to be a better way.
So after some time he came up with the ShelterBox system. A ten man tent, sleeping bags, cooking utensils, water purifiers, all fuel stoves, axes, hammers..anything that a recovering family might need, all packed into an easily transported box. These are stored in several places around the world,
near transport hubs. The Royal Airforce helps out in Europe and here of course the RAAF swings in behind our efforts here. Because it has no political connections, the ShelterBox is readily accepted in all countries.This is one of the great humanitarian actions of Rotary.
