Sunday Market

Jan 26, 2014

This was a special Australia Day market and was conducted at the Victory Memorial Gardens instead of our usual site. A great deal of
organisation went into this market lead by Market Chairman Col Mercer. (Please refer to President's announcements for acknowledgement of organisers)
OIC on the day was Michael Knight who had a big team consisting of: Col Mercer, Bob Willis, John Smith, Jim Gibson, Mal Robertson, Peter Crozier, Lawrie Blowes, James Ross, Rick Priest, Ken Taylor, Bruce Spinks, James Hamilton, David Pyke, Alan Eldridge, John Flynn, Peter McKinnon, Phil McIntosh, Hugh Campbell and Colin Duff.

In Michael's words, this was a massive market on Victory memorial Gardens Site. OIC acknowledged:
Planning by committed headed by Col Mercer; Site Preparation; Liaison with Council and Australia Day Committee; Work done by Rotarians - Team and Volunteers.

There was an incident where another group involved with Australia Day Committee, sharing the site, became aggressive and an individual from the group used inappropriate language, upsetting stall holders. The matter was settled by senior members. The stall holders were very positive about the site.

Recommendations: Repeat this opportunity if available in the future. Site weaknesses are lack of adequate toilet facilities and entry points cannot be controlled..

Results:
Gate           $2161.65
Stalls          $1190.00
Insurance   $ 300.00
Total:          $3651.00

Bulletin Changes

Clubrunner has released a major Version update to their software.  This is the first bulletin of the new version. You may have noticed the new format.

At this point we haven't managed to master all the changes and improvements, so please bear with us till all the new features are understood and implemented.

The improvements to the software include Multiple bulletin capabilities which will allow the club to publish seperate bulletins not only for the club, but for the Sunday Markets vendors, the Farmers Markets vendors, the Food and Wine Festival vendors and any other Rotary committee (RYLA, MUNA, etc).

Stories
Nelson Alvarado Farewell
Our photo shows Nelson with Host parents Cathy and Darren Wallace and Griffith exchage student recently returned from Peru Elise Delpiano.

Nelson began his speech to the Club by appealing for a sponsor so that he can stay here. Nelson said that he always wanted to come to Australia and had visions of the outback, Kangaroos in the streets etc. But for him the reality was much better.

Nelson admitted that, although he spoke English, he didn't have a clue what was being said at this first Rotary meeting and he thought our use of Sarcasm in humour was rude. Wagga Wagga was not what he had in mind when he asked to come to Australia for exchange. He had visions of a host parent located in Sydney by the harbour.

Fronm the day he first attended School he loved it. He made many friends whom he shall greatly miss. He recounted his amazing trips to Sydney, Uluru, Broken Hill and many other places assisted by members of our Club. At short notice he was able to attend the New Year's Eve fireworks from a boat on Sydney Harbour thanks to Darren Wallace.

Nelson thanked his four host families for their welcome and said he will miss them all. He particularly thanked Paul and Gioia Gianniotis who were his counsellors. "They were like a family to me all year"

During his stay Nelson tried his hand at Shearing a Sheep, lamb marking, Water skiing and travelling around Australia. He described it all as fun and crazy.

Nelson thanked current President Phil McIntosh and PP Andy Irvine for their roles in making him welcome and include all club members in his thanks. Nelson was able to remember every club member's name, a great feat for a young man who saw many of us only at weekly meetings.

He concluded his speech with a video which would do justice to the Australian Travel Industry as a promotional video of Australia. He was assisted in making the video by  Michael Knight and John Egan to whom he expressed his gratitude.

President Phil McIntosh replied to Nelson's farewell speech by saying that "12 months ago Nelson you arrived here as a reserved 16 year old. Within three weeks you had settled in and have now developed into a fine young man. Take this experience and leverage off it. Youhave picked up our language extremely well. On behalf of the Club I thank you for leaving such a positive impression. Good luck Mate, we will miss you and your humour. Thank you to all in the Club who have made Nelson's stay so positive, especially to host families and to Paul Gianniotis and Darren Wallace.

President's Report

ImageOur meeting today was held at Hammond Hall at the Wagga Showgrounds.

The location was chosen to accomodate a demonstration of a Highway Patrol Car, a subject of great interest.

After a light meal supplied by The Men's Shed members, President Phil opened the meeting on the dot of 12.30 p.m. by calling for the singing of Rotary Grace.

President Phil welcomed visitor John Nicholl and thanked The Men's Shed members for provision of the meal and Rick Priest for the PA system.

Phil announced:

  • Our Rotary Peace Nominee is Barbara Ferguson. Club members responded enthusiastically to this nomination. Barbara is well known to us as sister of our President Elect John Ferguson and a former speaker at our Club concerning her work with the Pygmie people of the Congo. Barbara's work has been life changing and literally life saving for a large number of people in this war torn area of Africa. This recognition is extremely well deserved.
  • Polio Plus fundraiser will be held at Forum Six Cinemas on 20th Feb 2014. Cost will be $20 to see the movie Lost Vegas.
  • RYDA. A meeting will be held at the Commercial Club on Wed 5th at 5 p.m. to finalise details for RYDA week coming up in March the week leading up to our Food and Wine Festival. Volunteers will be sought closer to the event.
  • Peace Ceremony 23rd Feb. A meeting to finalise arrangements will be held on Wed 5th at Commercial Club at 5 p.m. to finalise arrangements.
Due to our relocation there was no Lucky Door Prize this week.

  • The meeting on the 11th of February  will be Lyn Quigley to speak about Abbeyfield House.  Abbeyfield is involved in building houses for disabled young people who are currently in nursing homes.

Happy 94th Mary Pickard
Mary Pickard has celebrated her 94th birthday in style.  She is pictured here with her young son Brent and Joy.  Mary has been a welcome visitor at our meetings and a number of  Wollundry Rotarians have had the pleasure of Mary's hospitality while travelling in Canada.  Happy Birthday Mary!

Today, I would like to talk about a snapshot of our club and the importance of retaining Members. At the 2006 Changeover dinner there were 62 members in our Club. Today there are 80 (+-). Of the 62 members in 2006, 42 remain. Two members, Gordon Braid and Tony Elphick died and the other 18 left for one reason or another. The majority remain in Wagga.

The figures tell us that almost half our membership has joined since 2006 which indicates that there is a high turnover in membership.

Membership retention relies on members feeling welcome. Good fellowship, worthwhile projects and member involvement are all key to retention. Each of us can help to ensure retention by hospitality to fellow members especially towared new members.

Rotary Peace Ceremony

George Thomas Reminded all of the Rotary Peace Ceremony on 23rd Feb. Barbara Ferguson's nomination will be forwarded to the Peace Committee which will meet on 5th Feb at the Commercial Club. Three volunteers are required to assist in erecting some of our tents on the day at 10 am.

District Conference Orange 21st - 23rd March 2014

Please consider attending the above conference - there is always good fellowship and much to learn.

I need to confirm motel bookings soon - while John Smith made a block booking at the Town Square Motel in March last year we need to match names to the booking.

Of the 8 double and 2 twin rooms have already allocated some and now have 6 double and 1 twin left.

If we need more I will need to move quickly. Please let me know your requirements and check the District website for registration over the coming week.

RYLA
John Hawkins reminded members that RYLA is coming up in March April. It commences on 31st March and ends on 5th April. WOllundry needs some nominations of suitable young people between the ages of 18 and 28. RYLA will be held this year at Camp Kuurajong and the cost will be $600. Please contact John for further details if you have someone in mind who might be suitable.
