David Benn introduced Ken Cook, Rick Priest & John Smith and their journey, taken along with Colin Butt and Jack Morgan of Kooringal Rotary, twenty-three years ago. They went to Manus Island to complete a school building which had been started by other Rotarians and required the fimal securing of the building to act as a girls' dormitory. Their voyage was from another era almost; fireworks in baggage and photo's of a group of younger men who struck a similarity with those we know but who seemed in some cases only half the men we know now.
Could it be only 23 years ago? David Benn, Colin Butt, Rick Priest, John Smith, Ken Cook and Jack Morgan of Kooringal Rotary about to go to Manus Island.
The villagers on the island had little of what we consider necessary; the school was to be an important part of development and education. In the process the team also repaired water supply and did other work in the area for the groups they were assisting. They had guided tours around Moresby, unsafe as it was, with military assistance due to their connections with locals who had been in Wagga and befriended there. On Manus, a quite remote and hard-to-get-to place, they were greeted as friends and received as they gave. The gratitude of the people was humbling and the work of our group was all the more important for it.
They had trips into the forest, seeing all manner of jungle exotica. They also came across some of the many war relics; Benny still has a Japanese memento he picked from the ground against the advice of his guides, who scattered when he strated prising something from the earth. They were certainly more wary of war relics and their propensity to do harm, but Benny got his souvenier.
The journey itself was a big part of their story and their memories; the issues with power and water at the village merely side-lines to the bigger picture of helping a community with little to offer but their own generous hospitality.

President John plucked Wayne Jenkins from relative obscurity to lead us in singing Rotary Grace. A toast to the queen, an acknowledgment of the people of Australia was also observed, as apparently he felt stung by last week's thinly-veiled call for procedural correctness. A new form of "PC" perhaps....?
President John acknowledged the efforts of wives and partners in assisting us to get the Food and Wine Festival to the successful compeltion it was. Despite us being the blokey club we are, we rely on our betters to get these large tasks done, and we are grateful indeed.
Our sole guest at the meeting was Michael Foley, escorted by Rob Nicholson.
Peter Gissing told us of the Rotary NSW Community Service Awards - should you know anyone to be nominated please send details through to the Projects Committee for attention.
John Smith was OIC of the Farmers' Market last week. A great day for the market, as predicted by Secretary Paul, with 27 stall-holders, lots of people and a whisker under $2,000 banked. Smith was ably assisted by Wayne Jenkins, John Daley, Col Duff, Kerry Pascoe, Doug Conkey, Mike Eldridge, Neil Pinto (no sign of lucky pegs), John Egan, Jim Gibson and Adhil Lathif, a local student doing voluntary work for his HSC
Rick Priest gave a touching gift to Doug Conkey after his family's bereavement in the form of a Cootamundra Wattle. We all hope it helps Doug and family in their sorrow.
Laurie Blowes wore two hats, as a stand-in for Secretary Paul, who was absent, and as a stand-up as Sargeant-at-Arms. He mentioned that he was a recent convert to the Wagga Wagga Historical Society's good works, to which several remarks were heard asking "Are you Secretary yet?" and "Joined as an exhibit....?". Given the miscreants weren't fined it's assumed he was speaking on behalf of our secretary, not Sargeant.
Committee Chairs are requested to make reports to the Board for their next meeting. David Benn was fined for wearing a skirt, although it was also suggested that maybe the club finally had a transgender member. Doug was fined for being late to the market. Basically everyone was fined for the slimmest pretext. Good show, Laurie!
John Gray advised us that if we were not members of the RSL/Commercial Club then could we please do so. Attending our meeting was okay as it is considered a function, but even farting apparently causes apoplexy for the local Licencing Sargeant. It would offend me in other ways but, seriously, to avoid complicating life for everyone, please join up. After explaining the process of applying to join, Mark Hillis asked for guidance on the process of joining. Thanks Mark.
Pete McKinnon thanked those who had helped so far at RYLA and asked for more volunteers if possible. It's been a fantastic program and the week is looking great for the participants.
Phil asked for some assistance with data entry eminating from the last (or should we say, first) Cycle Challenge. Several volunteers were sourced, thank you!
Nick reminded us that Working with Children Checks were a must if we were involved with children; basically all of us. It is painless so please go through the process.After an explanation of this, the wags in the audience (not WAGS; wags) checked that Mark was right with the details. I'm sure I heard "thank you", not those other words.
