President John introduced our guest speakers Ryan Forsythe (left) and Raphael McGowan (right) from the Clontarf Foundation. Ryan was born and educated in Wagga and John has known him for a long time. Ryan is the director of the Clontarf Foundation at Mt Austin High School. Raphael went St Michael and Trinity and is now the Community Development Officer of the Clontarf Foundation in Sydney.
The Clontarf Foundation exists to improve the education, discipline, self-esteem, life skills and employment prospects of young Aboriginal men and by doing so, equip them to participate more meaningfully in society.
The organization, which is a non-profit organization, started in 2000 and they exist all over Australia and they are present in schools where there is a high Aboriginal population with poor retention and attendance. The objective is to get these boys to attend school, graduate and get a job.
They have 63 academies across Australia. They use sports as a way to engage with Aboriginal boys. It is important for Clontarf to become a community organization and establish themselves. The foundation bases their principles around six pillars … education, employment, football sport, leadership, partners and well-being. He gave an example of one young man who had 93 disciplinary entries in his record for the semester prior to joining Clontarf and only 8 in the semester after joining. Clontarf has two training sessions per week, and it starts at 7am in the morning! They started with 15 young men and now they they get 40+.
They are supported by large organizations: Rio Tinto, Westfarmers, Cricket Australia. Raphael talked about having 700 boys in 11 towns in New South Wales. Currently there is a drive on to build up local employment options for the boys.
President John noted to all the members that the Clontarf boys will be assisting us in helping to set up on Friday for the Food and Wine Festival.
Alan Eldridge gave a vote of Thanks. He felt that it was the right group to target and he commended them for their hard work and asked the members to join him in appreciation for their presentation.
President John began the meeting by welcoming visitors and guests and called member’s attention to a Rotary Down Under article featuring a story and photographs of dream cricket. He reminded members our club was a leader in establishing dream cricket in our region.
He then reminded members of the February 26th Polio Plus Movie Night. He noted the price of the movie as $20 per head and a social function at the Thirsty Crow after the movie.
He also noted the District Conference which will be held March 20st -22rd, and the early bird discounts ended on February 20th.
He announced that Lorraine Hill is our nominee for the Peace Ceremony. Dave Pyke will be attending the meeting as our representative.
The BMW Launch for the Food and Wine Festival will be held on Wednesday, the 11th and he invited members to attend.
President John mentioned that there is some of Dick Smith’s “Rooster’s Ghost” wine left and you can contact Laurie Blowes to pick up a few bottles.
John announced that the Junee Rotary is having a concert function at the Round house on Saturday, the 14th February. The band the Night Shift will be performing plus the group Champagne Flutes..Cost is $25 per adult $10 per child, bring your own chair.

This is a friendly reminder to the members in the 2015 Wheel Meal Deal that the first round is now happening and it's a good time to plan your event. Your first round should be completed by May 1st 2015.
For those new members who are unfamiliar with the Wheel Meal Deal, it is simply a meal with fellow members and their partners. There are three rounds in a year. For one round you will host two other Wollundry couples. For the other two rounds, you are the guests. The Wheel Meal Deal is a great way to get to know members better and for our partners to become more involved in the Rotary family.
Michael Georgiou approached the podium unaware that he was the sergeant and he regaled us with another one of his adult jokes, collecting from everyone for the privilege.
