Our Meeting
Past President John was still in fine form and very proud of his elevation to President of the Wagga Wagga Club.
He congratulated David Benn on his excellent Poet's Day event, which even gained praise from David Gilby, our Wagga Wagga  Poet Laureate (David's new book is for sale if you would like a copy)
There was a warm welcome for the four Apexians who attended our meeting; Neil Molineaux, Matt Longmore, Tim Sheather and our guest speaker Andrew Roberts.
PP John also extended congratulations to Doug Sutton who was our representative on the Peace Day Committee.
Our beautiful Kat did not get the opportunity to read for us on Poets Day, so PP John invited her to recite for us in Swedish and in English a poem about the dark of winter at Christmas. It was really well received.
Burmo is back! It was wonderful to see a trim version of our very popular member back with us after a record 6 bypasses.

And of course it is 38 yrs since we became a club, albeit provisional, and we still have two of the original members with us, Ken Cook and Burmo.  Ken writes:
"On the last Tuesday of February, 1978, twenty one fellows including Graham Burmeister and Ken Cook met at the Wagga Wagga Commercial Club to form the provisional Rotary Club of Wollundry – Wagga Wagga
The interim committee comprised of Graham Hornibrook as chairman, with Gordon Braid, Graham Burmeister, Graeme Maher, Greg Walker and Tony Youngman as directors
Sel Rawlings was elected sergeant at arms
So today we celebrate 38 years of Wollundry fellowship"
This is a great Milestone.

We didn't have a formal Sergeants Session today, but Burmo related how he met a beautiful nurse with the surname Barzen. A Wagga name, he explained. Turns out she is partnered with Mark Hillis's son. Mark was quick to pay.

Secretary Report  Laurie Blowes in his secretary's role asked that we do take notice of rosters and make sure that we fill our responsibilities.
The Guest Speaker next week is Neil Pinto, and we will also have a "this is my life" from Laura Tibbetts who was an exchange student some years back.
He also asked for voluteers for RYDA.

CPR is coming up. If you haven't established your  Federal Government Student Number, please do so and get it to Jim Gibson as soon as possible.

The Northcott Fundraising Committee is holding a Literary Dinner on March 11th
Northcott began life as the Crippled Children's Society with the Rotary Club of Sydney, and does great work here in Wagga offering respite and accomodation for young people.
Our Guest Speaker
Our Guest speaker to day was Andrew Roberts , son of our former and very valued member, the late Brian Roberts.
In recent years we have been able to form strong bonds with the South Wagga Apex Club, and Andrew gave us an interesting outline of the club and its history.
The club was formed in 1961, and in that 55 yrs or so has awarded 20 life members, and contributed a staggering 44,000 hours of community service. It has also contributed more than $2.5 million dollars to to worthy causes.
Currently it has 17 members, and meets fortnightly. Apexians are aged under 45 and consequently have strong family committments. "Being a Father is much more important than Apex"
Apex can admit women, and there are 106 clubs nation wide.
Currently South Wagga Apex is involved with the Gumi Festival, which was a very great success. It was closely scrutinised by the Maritime Services this year, and the Club was congratulated by them for the manner in which they implemented the rather stringent safety rules. A big feather in their cap! This will make it much easier to conduct the race next year. Wollundry members acted as on shore scrutineers for them this year.
They also run the Food Appeal, and the Lake to Lake event.
In recent times they have swung behind us at the Beers and Gears, and The Food and Wine Festival, and assist in the same manner the Wagga Book Fair.
The highlight is the cooperation that we have established between the two organisations, Rotary and Apex.
Andrew was thanked by acting President John.
The Peace Ceremony
Rotary Peace Awards.
The combined Rotary Clubs of Wagga Wagga were well represented at the Peace Day Ceremony.
There were a few changes made this year which included allowing organisations to be considered.
All of the Wagga Wagga high schools took part, with some really heartening stories of what they, the students, have set up in their school communities.
These young people really do recognise that there are others who are doing it tough for all sorts of reasons and in all sorts of ways, and they are doing great things to help, both within and without their school communities.
Our choice  was Don Jones who lives at The Rock and has done a great deal of work through the St Vincent de Paul. A worthy candidate. But this year the Helen and Peter Walsh award went to Teys who operate the killing works at Bomen. They were chosen for their heavy involvement with the welfare of their workers, and in the wider community
