David was introduced to us by AG Alan Sharpe. David is a real estate agent based in Blayney who also runs a small grazing property at Kings Plains. Our club is his 12th visit of 40 he has to do as DG.
David spoke to us of RI President Gary Huang (pronounced Hung) Light Up Rotary vision being based on a saying of the Chinese legendary teacher, politician and philosopher Confucius: It is better to light one small candle than to curse the darkness. It is the responsibility of every Rotarian to light up one candle – or interpreted to mean sign up at least one new member.
David spoke about one small Rotarian joining Rotary in Nambour Qld who went on to become RI President and set Rotary on the task of eradicating Polio in 1979. That was Sir Clem Renouf. The eradication of Polio is now considered to be within the next 3 years.
David spoke about the KISS principle as being his philosophy in business and in Rotary. District 9700 has written goals and a task this year is to induct new members at a rate of 5% of the current district membership of 1100 to contain the decline in numbers from resignations and passings.
He is also introducing the Paul Harris Society to the district aimed at - as he said – members earning too much money. More on the Paul Harris Society will no doubt be forthcoming soon.
Finally he spoke of the District PR team including PDG John Egan, the use of social Media such as Facebook to spread the Rotary message in our district and of a proposal to have drop down list on the district web page to encourage cross pollination of ideas between clubs in the district.
Concluding his talk David and President John exchanged badges and banners.
President John opened the meeting and introduced our District Governor David Kennedy from Blayney, ADG Alan Sharpe, visiting Rotarian Digby Foster from Kooringal Club. Guest Rob Nicholson was introduced by his host?
John announced two successful candidates to 2015 National Youth Science Forum. They are Matilda Baldwin and Simon Bannister.
He mentioned a survey of stallholders conducted over the weekend and reminded Market Committee members of a meeting at 5.30pm on Wednesday.
John Gray was welcomed back from his travels.
Franzi told us about “Learning Wagga High School” finding the library then losing the library, attending her first Farmers market, a trip to David and Cherie Benn’s farm and kite flying and go karting with her host siblings – although she did point out she did not drive a kart herself.
President John skited a little about talented singers in the club while announcing the Wagga Rugby Choir will be performing at the Civic Theatre on 16th August with the Victorian Welsh Choir. Does that mean Victorians singing Welsh songs or Expat Welshmen in Victoria who have formed a Choir?
German word of the week:
Franzi’s new German word this week is for “Library” – die “Bibliothek” (which is similar to the French biblioteque) and Bibliotheken (plural)
Lucky Door Prize
DG David drew the following numbers for the lucky door prize: 8/11/27/37/17 to get Col Duff.
Next week PP Phil will be acting for President John who has a commitment in Darwin
Well done Orange Daybreak who recently presented $80,000 to the Orange District Early Education Program, the proceeds of their Orange Daybreak Rotary Ball. Of course service work is not just about fund raising but isn't it great to see several District Clubs conducting very successful activities like this. Orange, Blayney and Wollundry Wagga are among other recent examples.
DISTRICT SERVICE COMMITTEES
Did you know that there are eleven Service Project Committees in our District responsible for projects such as RAWCS, Shelterbox, Interplast, ROMAC and Vocational Service? You can see a full list and get more information by clicking on the Service Tab at the top of the District website homepage at www.rotary9700.org.au At the bottom you’ll see a list of Service Committee contacts. Use those contacts to learn more about the opportunities to be involved or just to ask a question or arrange a guest speaker for one of your club meetings.
DISASTER AID AUSTRALIA
We don’t currently have a District Committee or contact (other than myself) for Disaster Aid Australia. Let me know if you are interested or have any suggestions.
CLUB BULLETINS
Thank you to those Clubs who have added me pgissing@y7mail.com to your Club Bulletin mailing list. They make very interesting reading and it’s a great help to me as District Service Projects Director to better understand the fantastic service work Rotary is involved with throughout the District.
DISTRICT SERVICE HOURS
As in previous years District 9700 is again asking Clubs to indicate the number of service hours undertaken to help promote the great work done by Rotary in our communities. I’ve attached a recent article organised by District PR Chair, John Egan. Similar local articles appeared in a number of local newspapers throughout the district and we’d like to do more of this sort of promotion in the future. I’ll be asking for first half year service hours in early February 2015 and second half year service hours in early June 2015.
PROMOTION
Promotion of activities is often a very important part of their success. Let me know if you’d like your activities included with the District website home page stories or the DG’s Newsletter. We can also arrange for your major activities to be included in the District Events Calendar on the home page. Utilise your own local media contacts and District PR Chair, John Egan, johnandmariaegan@gmail.com will also have lots of ideas to assist.
HERE TO HELP
We're not "from the Government" but we are here to help! Use the Service Committee contacts mentioned above or send me an email or give me a call at any time.

Rotary Australia World Community Service or more commonly known as RAWCS had its beginnings in 1964 when PDG Keith Hopper from Inverell Club proposed a program to support developing countries in the field of Health, Hunger and Humanitarian aid programs. He came up with the name which identified the vision, FAIM (Fourth Avenue in Motion) and set up overseas work teams to make his vision a reality.
In 1987, RAWCS Ltd was set up as a public company to coordinate the activities of FAIM, International Projects Advisory Committee (IPAC), Donations in Kind (DIK), Safe Sanitation and Water Saves Lives (SSWSL) and Rotarians against Malaria (RAM).
In 2013, RAWCS established the Rotary Australia Benevolent Society (RABS) to assist Rotary Clubs and Rotary Districts within Australia to respond to needs within their own communities and to gain tax deductibility for donations made to their particular project. RABS projects must provide direct relief to people in need. If the clients are disadvantaged , the relief should target that disadvantage.
Wollundry Cycle Challenge
PP Phil spoke on the Wollundry Cycle Challenge and showed us the new Logo. The event will be held on 5th October. Despite this being a long weekend all hands are requested to help. About 50 odd road marshalls will be required and about 50 odd helpers to run the Beer and Cider Festival after the races.
Wagga City Council has been extremely co-operative getting traffic management plans and DA.s approved in what must surely be record times. Four cycle races all timed to finish together will go via North Wagga to CSU and return, to Houlaghans Creek Bridge on the Gap Road and return, up Malibo Hill on Old Narrandera Road to Millwood road and return and via Millwood road to Coolamon and Marrar and Return.
