President John Ferguson called the meeting to order at 12.30 pm and called on Jeremy Reithmuller to lead us in Rotary Grace. This was followed by the usual toast to The Queen and People of Australia.
President John then welcomed our visitors: George Weston from Leeton Rotary Club, Philip and Deidre Tome from Kooringal and Sunrise respectively, Trevor Urquhart from SVDP, Jackie Stumpel, (Franzi's Counsellor), Sandra Legge, Margaret Priest and our Exchange Student Franzi.
President John reminded members that next week's meeting is a vocational visit to TAFE. There will be no meeting at the Commercial Club next week.
There will be a combined Board Meeting next Monday at the Commercial Club at 5.15 p.m.

Another Cheque Presentation - this time to Noosawan Kouykai School, with $2500 donated by Wollundry Rotary, and $2500 from District 9700 under the matching grants scheme. See the report from James Hamilton for more details of how this matching grant process is arranged.

The cheque for the Thai school was accepted by Kae Bradshaw. It will be used to build a kitchen at this school which is located in Northern Thailand.

Graham Burmeister and John Ireland attended the Scholarship Presentation Ceremony at CSU, on May 20, representing Wollundry Rotary, and Graham starred in photos of the current award winners.

Sally Tanner is the newest recipient of the scholarship that our club provides to CSU students. She is enrolled in the Bachelor of Science degree. The award is limited to local residents, studying in the area of science, and provides assistance of $2000 per annum for up to three years. Sally is the daughter of Lindsay Tanner. |

Olivia Curry won one of the Book Prizes this year, and that should help her with expensive textbooks in the Medical Radiation degree that she pursues.
|
Henry Risson is enrolled in the
Bachelor of Agricultural Science course, and gets help with a book prize, in the first year of his studies. The value of this prize is $500.

Under the Constitution and Bylaws of our club, a committee, The Projects Committee, investigates applications from community groups that seek assistance from Wollundry Wagga Wagga Rotary Club. This panel weights up all the factors that must be considered and then reports back to the board with a recommendation through the Community Services Director.
The Board considers the recommendations that it receives, and is charged with making a decision to commit the club to a project, or to vary the level or terms of any assistance. The Board has been elected to run the club, and disburse any donations.
Under our by laws, a donation or project with a monetary value of over $1000, (originally $500, back in 1978) must be referred to club members at a weekly club meeting, for the decision to be ratified, which is to provide formal acceptance. This implies that debate on approving a project should be limited to the Board decision. The motion should be:
"That the Boards decision to approve.........................( this project) be ratified".

District & Global Matching Grants
Rotary’s areas of Focus
The Rotary Foundation has identified six areas of focus for the new grant structure. These areas reflect critical humanitarian issues and needs that Rotarians can address worldwide. They align Rotary with other international development efforts and will strategically advance the Foundation mission.
Six Focus areas are:
- Peace and conflict prevention/resolution
- Disease prevention and treatment
- Water and sanitation
- Maternal and child health
- Basic education and literacy
- Economic and community development
WHAT ARE GLOBAL GRANTS?
Global grants support large international activities with sustainable, measurable outcomes in one or more of the six areas of focus.
Global grants must:
- Be an international partnership between a Rotary club or district in the country where the activity takes place and a Rotary club or district outside of that country
- Be sustainable and include plans for long-term success after the global grant funds have been spent
- Include measurable goals that are demonstrated through progress reports
- Align with one of our six areas of focus
- Respond to real community needs
- Include active participation from both Rotarians and community members
- Have a minimum budget of US$30,000
- Meet the eligibility requirements in the grants terms and conditions
WHAT ARE DISTRICT GRANTS?
District grants fund smaller, short-term activities that address needs in both your local community and communities worldwide. Each district gets to choose which activities it will fund with these grants.
You can use district grants to fund a variety of activities, including:
- Humanitarian projects, including service travel and disaster recovery efforts
- Scholarships for any level, length of time, location, or area of study
- Vocational training of any team size or time span
Matching Grants applications close on the 1st April each year
Club’s Matching Grant Applications
- Noosavon Kouykai School kitchen school located in northern Thailand
- The project satisfied 3 of the focus areas i.e. Disease prevention and treatment, Basic education and literacy, and Economic and community development.
- Our club pledged $2,500 towards the project
- District was asked to match the amount
- Total funding approved for the project is $5,000
- Wollundry Rotary/TAFE Riverina educational scholarship
- The project satisfies 2 of the focus areas i.e. Basic education and literacy and Economic and community development
- Our club pledged $2,000 towards the project
- TAFE pledged $1,000 towards the project
- District was asked to match the amount of $2,000
- This application has not been successful at District level.

GUEST SPEAKER
Mark Hillis, Franzi, Col Duff and Darren Wallace
Today it was the turn of our much loved Exchange Student Franzi Treber to reflect on her year with our club and what a year it was!
She was introduced by Wollundry Youth Director, Darren Wallace who described Franzi as dedicated, hard working courageous and a host of other positive attributes.
Franzi had a power point presentation of a wonderful travelogue around Australia that she has enjoyed over the past twelve months. She also showed a video of her Safari, with other exchange students, to Central Australia and the Whitsundays.
Franzi's presentation was in Chronological order commencing with her stay with Mark and Chrissy Hillis. Her trip to Canberra was her first venture outside of Wagga and she was very excited to see the National Capital.
During this time she went in a "small plane" for the first time with Andy Irvine. She says she was nervous at first but soon gained confidence in Andy's skill.
She went skiing at Thredbo, visited John Ireland's farm, visited Sydney with the Roberts family and attended a game of Aussie Rules Football, went motor bike riding and went to the Gold Coast for a week.
Franzi's second host stay was with Chris and Angela Metcalfe.
During the next three months Franzi reported:
going to Horse Race Meeting, - flying to Kunnunurra with Geoff Hamilton in his "small plane", including flying over Uluru and fishing, - attending the Australian Open Tennis with John Ferguson, - going to Callala Beach with the Pintos - and experiencing a hot Christmas including plastic Christmas Trees.
David and Kaz Hodge were the next host parents and Franzi.
Once again Franzi extended her outdoor activity and this time it was water skiing, starting on Lake Albert, then Talbingo and finally Mildura where her skill level had noticeably increased to riding a single ski. She particularly enjoyed have some host siblings of a similar age.
She also enjoyed making chocolate with her Counsellor Jackie Stumpel.
During this period she enjoyed a highlight of her exchange the Safari, with other exchange students to outback Australia. She also enjoyed a week in Sydney with the Hodges.
Her final three months are with Colin and Jenni Duff.
Once again Franzi has not been idle. She has traveled to Melbourne and Tassie with Geoff Hamilton, - been to Sydney for a weekend and nursed a Koala at Taronga Zoo and witnessed the Light Show on Sydney's icons.
Franzi said she has made many good friends at school and will miss them greatly. She was very thankful of the opportunity afforded her by Wollundry Rotary and especially the generosity of her host families and those who have given her many wonderful new experiences. "This has been the best year of my life" said Franzi.
A heartfelt vote of thanks was given by Mark Hillis who described Franzi in glowing terms as as gracious, loyal and loving and with a good sense of humour. He asked Franzi to make sure she thanks her parents on her return home, for bringing up such a beautiful girl.
Members showed their appreciation with a round of applause.

James Ross took the parade and whipped some discipline into David Benn - He was late, and on the phone.
This sergeant has campaigned to promote apologies when you can't make a meeting. There are improvements noted, but not yet up to James' expectations, and the problem is that until names are named, the fine box will not register any takings. The ball is in your court, James.
A district conference is being arranged for next April, and to market the event, we need a "sexy, catchy name". James put out a call for help - any suggestions. Then we canvassed collective names for groups of people, but few fines. More time was needed, but the collective noun for a group of Rotarians is obviously a "ring"
Cross Fines were forthcoming. James paid for ignorance of the Conference timing. Michael Georgiou occupied top half of front page of today's Daily Advertiser, barely a week after the story of his van igniting at Silvalite.

Our Meeting
David Benn drew our attention to a film night fund raiser on Thursday Night 11th for the film Stranger Land.
A Rotary Golf Day including a barbecue is to be held at the Country Club on Sun 28th June. Barbecue will comence 11.30 am and golf will commence with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. David needs numbers if you are playing.
Projects
Doug Conkey projects chairman, presented a cheque of $3,000 to Trevor Urquhart, Regional President of St. VIncent De Paul to assist with their Winter Appeal. In receiving the cheque, Trevor expressed appreciation for the work Wollundry does and said that the number of assisted cases had risen to 88 per week for the Society. This is higher than normal and reflects the growing need for the poor in our community.
Secretary Paul Milde also moved a motion of $1,000 donation to Australian Rotary Health. The motion was seconded by Andy Irvine and all were in favour.
Youth Exchange
Darren Wallace thanked those who have volunteered to host our new exchange student.
We now have four host families for Katarina Janzon who will arrive from Sweden in July.
The first host family will be David & Cathy Pyke, followed by (order TBC) Bruce & Joo-Yee Spinks, Jonty and Lou Shuter and Rob and Suzanne Fuller.
Special thanks to the above four members and their families for taking on this vital role in supporting Youth Exchange.
Deidre Tome (Sunrise Rotary) thanked Wollundry Rotary in her role as District Youth Officer, for the great work our club has done in this area over many years. She particularly thanked Darren Wallace for his work and assistance to host families. She also thanked Jacke Stumpel for her work as counsellor.
Sergeants Session 
Lawrie Blowes was surprised to be asked to fine members as he was unaware he was sergeant for the day. He must have a well hidden mean streak because he had no trouble filling the coffers. He fined President John for forgetting a legacy meeting, Queensland Rugby League Supporters, Anyone going overseas, Anyone who had a view on interest rate movements, in short pretty much the whole club.
