SUNDAY MARKETS

John Gray led the team on Sunday, 2nd March, and noted that all on his team, were over 65y.o. This contradicts the old adage that old age is always 15 years older than me, and now!!!! John Noted that the group was fit, active, and responsive, and enjoyed great weather. The crowd responded by getting out and going to our markets.
Recommendations for the market committee included providing chairs for parents watching kids on car rides, more rope, or occy straps to secure new signs, and maintenance is required on basin tap in the ladies toilet - it is running and unable to isolate.

The team assembled to help J Gray run his market were:
Laurie Blowes
Craig Bromley
David Byfield
Wal Paton
Kevin Watts

During the morning, we had a visit from one of our charter members, Bruce Pinney, and his wife, Bev. Couldn't stay Away

Our Tuesday Meeting
Guest Speaker Graham Hornibrook

Graham Hornibrook was the Charter President of Wollundry Rotary, in 1978, and remained a member for many years, and when he left the club, he maintained many links with Rotary, including membership of the Probus club that Wollundry had created. Graham is still heavily involved in Rotary friendship exchange programs, and has travelled to New York State in the US during the year, weith an Australian Rotary group.

Graham had collected some banners, and first up told us of the Rotary club of Lima, a small club of just 13 members, and that they had joined with the Rotary club of Ontario-Walworth to organise a dance - a Dirty Disco, to raise funds, and it was attended by around 200, including the Australian contingent.
Graham had a copy of a book, produced by an American Rotary club, and told us than one of the clubs that hosted the group  had a program where they provided the book as a learning aid to slow learners at school. The Four Way Test that guides the ethics of Rotarians, underpins the values in the book.

Wollundry Rotary has had two families travel overseas on Friendship exchange, with the Hornibrooks previously visiting South Africa and Canada, and PP Colin Butt, with Faith, his wife visiting Central America twice. Graham is very enthusiastic about the scheme, the opportunity to travel and stay with local families, to experience home hosting and meet people who may respond by visiting your home or area at a later date. He indicated that five couples travelled to USA, with three of those from Wagga Wqgga, but the return visit from America would involve 10 couples, all of whom need to be hosted in Wagga, so opportunities exist to become involved as a host, and to participate in the program.

The inbound friendship exchange will be in Wagga Wagga from Thursday May 15, until Tuesday May 20, and if you are able to help Graham out by hosting, his phone number is: 6933 1350. Many of the activities are arranged for the group, but housing needs to be addressed for each visiting couple.

The second type of exchange that Rotary offers is called club to club, and can be to any destination in the world where Rotary is active. The program needs involvment from the District Governors.

Presidents Report March 4
President Phil opened the meeting, and welcomed all in attendance, but singling out for special mention, Charter President Graham Hornibrook, who was the Guest Speaker for the Day, President of Kooringal Rotary, Phillip Tome, who was at our meeting in his capacity on the group 5 delegate for Youth Exchange in District 9700, Father of our outbound Exchange Student, Jonty Schuter, at the meeting as a guest of James Ross, and former member, Rooney Galloway, who has an accent very similar to all the South African cricket commentators, and under the circumstances, a sudden convert to Australian citizenship as cricket scores develop.

Peter Clucas is back, along with some other skiers, and had a report on the condition of Mark Hillis. Peter advided that Mark had come out of surgery so well that he was taken back to his ward, rather than the intensive care that he was expecting. Five days on, Mark is not yet ready for discharge, but we hope that he is released soon, has a great recovery, and rejoins us soon. His name was read out for market rosters this weekend, but if he isn't back, the rest of the team will cover........

Both the District Conference in Orange, and the Rotary Convention in Sydney are coming around very soon, and Phillip urged all our members to be involved in these opportunities to live Rotary on a wider scale than is available within our own club.

The Food and Wine Festival is now less than four weeks away, and the rosters have been on the tables at every meeting this year.
There are gaps, but not too many, but there are members who have not chosen slots that they prefer, and risk being rostered in the gaps - even if they do not suit. The Food and Wine Festival committee are ticking off more and more on their checklist, and the workload is mounting, but with great generosity, help will arrive.

One of the tasks still to be completed is the fabrication of the ticket selling Booths, and there will be a working bee on Saturday 8th March at Kevin Robens big back shed to prepare the booths.

Frank Fuller is co-ordinating our involvement with the Science and Engineering Challenge, and the contribution from Wollundry Rotary club is to provide trestles to the betting ring at the MTC on Monday afternoon (Frank Fuller, Andy Irvine and Hugh Campbell)
and a team to supervise the activities on Tuesday between 8.30am and 3.00 pm (Brian, Hugh and James). Then, all the gear needs to be packed up and returned top North Wagga.

Philip noted that our Japanese Expeditionary force had returned - Boots dried out, skis and poles returned to the rack, and plastic cards suitably depleted. He asked for the best photos to be published in the bulletin, and we await prints to come from the lab so that we can comply.

Paul Milde publishes the rosters, Birthdays, anniversaries and other notable occurances in the bulletin, but he might not record that he was offering for sale, tickets in a raffle for a patchwork quilt. ROMAC, the project that provides medical procedures free for children from third world countries, has been selected by DG Geoff's wife, Bettye. Paul was committed to sell three books, and may have acheived that target, but he is sure to get some more if you harrass him.

Psychs on Bikes

Some of you will be aware by now that a group of Psychiatrists, Psychologists and Mental Health nurses are riding motor bikes into Wagga Wagga on Saturday March 8. (This Saturday)

They will be holding an open forum at the RSL, 7pm Saturday night discussing "How to love someone living with a mental illness."

They are also holding a breakfast for Health Care Professionals on Sunday morning at the new International Motel.

This is for everyone, even those who don't have a loved one who is effected. The statistics show that one person in five will have a problem at some time in their lives, and this will help us all to recognise the situation, and know what to do and where to find help.

The Psychs on Bikes are being aided by Australian Rotary Health, so it is a Rotary project in that way

If you know someone who would find it valuable, let them know and encourage them to come along. Or if  you would like to learn more, come to the RSL this Saturday evening. It should be very enlightening.

Wheel Meal Deal at Murray's
A Wollundry Rotary Wheel Meal Deal was held at Paul and Carolyn Murray's home with Phil and Lynette McIntosh and Dick and Gail Smith as guests.  It was a great evening of friendship.

Members Japan Ski Trip

On 21 Feb Peter Clucas led a ski trip to Grand Harifu Niseko in Japan.  The team consisted of 16 mostly Wagga blokes with 4 Wollundry Rotarians.  We travelled via a 5hr stopover in Hong Kong to Sapporo New Chitose airport on the northern island of Hokkaido in Japan. Then a 2 hr bus to Niseko.

The snow was fantastic with 4 mtr deep snow on the mountain and 2-3 mtrs in the village.  The weather was mostly blue skies for all of the week, which was a bit disappointing, as we all wanted new snow to ski the legendry Niseko powder.  Temperatures were only down to about -10C during the day, which was a bit warm for what we really wanted.

All had a great time and returned on 3 March with no-one breaking anything.
