President's Report

At our Board Meeting this week we discussed a number of issues including:

  • Finances - we now have $62,000 in our Community account ready for new and on-going projects.
  • International Projects - Doug Sutton is chairing a District Committee which our Club is taking the lead in developing a Global Grant for a microfinance project in the Congo
  • We are hoping to support the upcoming Cambodian fundraising ball with strong attendance by members and partners and are looking to work up another International Project that will gain a matching Grant from the Rotary Foundation.  Please try and come to the Ball on March 5th.
  • Youth - RYLA is being run in April in Orange and we are looking for 18-25 year olds for the great leadership program - talk to David Foster about this.
  • Public Relations - we are looking for volunteers to help South Wagga Apex with the annual Gumi event - Feb 14th.
  • Membership - although Rotary International requires 50% attendance from members many clubs do not record attendance and we have decided not to be too heavy handed but would encourage all members keep their attendance and makeups as high as possible as we will continue to record this.
  • Markets - although we looked at supporting a new weekly Farmers' Market we have all decided the workload would be too much for those available mid week on a regular basis.

Geoff Hamilton.

Guest Speaker
Our Guest speaker was Paula Tooth from Murrumbidgee Life Education.

Paula has been an educator with Murrumbidgee Life Education in Wagga and the
surrounding region for over 16 years. Her work involves implementing programs in schools
to deliver a healthy lifestyle message to school children from kindergarten to year 12.
The programs cover healthy diet, alcohol and dru messages and are tailored to suit the
various stages of childrens education.
"Healthy Harold" is a popular giraffe character used in the k - 6  years to deliver messages
on healthy lifestyle and diet.
Older years are given information to make choices about using alcohol and drugs and the effects
they have on growing bodies.
All programs are delivered as part of the school curriculum.

The programs were started by the Reverend Ted Noffs to educate children about the effects of
drugs and alcohol on their bodies.
There are now 45 mobile learning centre vans in NSW featuring Healthy Harold.
The service is funded for years k-6 by the NSW government. The main areas covered are healthy living and eating,
safety, bullying, and cyber bullying and etiquette.
The messaging for high schools focuses on alcohol, smoking, and illicit drugs and how to stay safe.

The service is looking for volunteer drivers for the learnig centres (MR licence required).
David Wishart thanked Paula for an enlightening presentation.
