President's Report June 29th

Thankyou everyone for your support for my coming year as President of our club.
I, after a lot of effort, finally got to this point to do my report
I really do not like computers! The day went well today as my first meeting
It was a busy day but we got through it in a timely manner
Our guest speaker, David Jones (not related to the shopping chain) talked about the role of aircraft in fighting fires 
This was fascinating insight into the variety of craft and their uses
Phil gave us a run down on Gears and Beers. Let us all hope it gets up and going this year
It is great that we can still meet at Romanos with the new covid restrictions.
For safety people should wear their masks in the building unless actually eating and drinking
As we cannot sing , grace and the national anthem will just have to be in abeyance until things change; sadly

Our Meeting 
Today saw the new guard take the reins. It is Back to the Future as we had some members attending on Zoom as we face another round or Covid restrictions. Everyone else attending had to wear masks. President Richard introduced two guests, Ollie Campbell who was presented by David Benn, and our guest speaker, David Jones.
 
 
 
  
 
Our treasurer Ken had some good news for us as he presented the Budget for the year. A reduction in fees and a return from last year. Very well received.The budget was passed unanimously.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Phil McIntosh presented a very positive report on the Gears and Beers event coming up on the long weekend in October. The committee is now concentrating on raising sponsorship money to help with the running costs, which are not insubstantial.
Guest Speaker
 
David Jones is a senior officer with the RFS and is based in Albury . His talk today explained how the RFS acquired the "Marie Bashir", a Boeing 737 aerial tanker.
Firstly the question to be answered was why buy, rather than lease or borrow.As the Northern Hemisphere fire season overlaps ours, the availability of the bombers could be compromised. It is much better to have the aircraft based here in Australia..
That explained David went on to outline the sort of aircraft we needed. It had to be in top condition, being regularly maintained and updated. This aircraft came from South West Airlines in the US and was about 20 yrs old when it came up for sale.
In the US the firefighters often deploy converted 747s which can carry enormous amounts of liquid, but they are limited to very few air facilities because of the weight. The 737 can operate out of several airports in NSW including Dubbo and Wagga which makes it a nimble response machine, even though it carries a smaller payload.
It can deliver its whole 15,000 litres of water in just 2.5 seconds, and can travel at around 800 km in an hour, making it available at any fire in NSW in just an hour. It can be flown at very low altitude too, around 300ft,  and has a slow stall speed. It has the ability to spread the liquid retardants up to 2 kilometres, or as little as 400 metres.
It usually operates in conjunction with a Cessna Citation birddog, which directs the path, at the same time scanning for new hotspots.

David Golland gave us a very short introduction to the role of My Rotary and in particular Rotary Central in the gathering of statistics and guides to members of just how we are performing. Interesting 
 
 
 
Paul Harris Fellow
 
Paul Harris Fellows are the highest award a District or a Club can award .
Originally they were recognition given to an individual who donated $1000us to the Foundation. They still are, but Australians are loath to blow their own trumpet and consequently we look for someone who has done great work in the community, be that Rotary or the general community.
They are not to be thrown around like confetti but have deep significance. Not only do you have to do the job, but you have to do it extremely well.
Congratulations then go to Paul Murray for receiving a PHF for his outstanding work in the new district, providing enormous input into the communications area. Justly deserved.
 
 
  
 
Secretary's Report 29.06.21
Hi all,
 
President Richard has made the starting line. The first meeting out of the way, the ice broken, one week after the other from now on. Best wishes to you President Richard for the year ahead.
 
A chair for the Guest Speaker Committee is required. John Gray has stood down after a very successful tenure. This is an important role as Guest Speaker appearances are an integral part of weekly meetings. If there is someone out there who can contribute in this area, please contact President Richard.
 
Most of the rosters have been finalised and will appear in the Bulletin and be updated on a weekly basis.
Please organise swaps or replacements if you cannot carry out your listed rostered duty.
The new Committees will be entered into ClubRunner shortly.
 
Coolamon Changeover Dinner has been restricted to their own membership only, because of COVID restrictions.
A 50th anniversary celebration may be considered at a later date.
