Past President Andrew back in the chair -
for a day.
President John and PP Phil were both away from todays meeting, so Andy was extracted from archives to run the agenda today. He hadn't forgotten procedures, and soon dispensed the Rotary Grace and Loyal toast. An extensive session of fellowship followed, then visiting Rotarians and guests were sought - without success.

Next week, sheets to register as volunteers for the Food and Wine Festival will be circulated. The Festival will be held on Saturday 28th March, and the workload will extend over the three day period 27, 28, and 29th, with set up and pull down commitments. Andrew urged all our club members to get these dates into their diaries, and keep the dates clear of extraneous distractions.

Further information on the District 9700 Conference was provided. Cowra is the venue this year, and it will be held the week before the Food and Wine festival, on 20, 21 and 22 March.
District Governor David Kennedy has emailed all Rotarians with information, Registration forms and a plea to attend this significant event in the Rotary year. Early bird registration discounts apply until February 20, so get in early. As usual, we will assemble for a club dinner at a restaurant on the friday night, and a booking has been made by the ever efficient organizer - John Smith.

John Gray presented the Rotary Information segment, and in the process asked any members visiting any part of Sydney to keep an eye out for his lost glasses - as he was uncertain just where he lost them. Was that why he stumbled over the reading? Our Rotary information "sharing Rotary with new members" was courtesy of an overseas Rotary club, printed off the website, and reproduced in 6 point type - very small, so hopefully John had a backup pair of specs.

Peter Crozier was back at the meeting today, after over three months of travel in North America and Europe. Peter had managed the requirements of USA immigration and Border control without the dramas encountered by George Thomas, but will no doubt have many fine stories to tell about his experiences - perhaps a future guest speaker.

Our program on 13th January was a music quiz, where 30 short excerpts from Musical items were played, and one or two questions were asked about each track. The music ranged from light classical, through Stage and Screen to comedy, Pop and Rock classics. There were only two questions that stumped everybody - Ravel's Bolero and Kimbra's Birthplace, and several that we all knew - Freddie Mercury, Joe Cocker and Dave Brubeck. Gough Whitlam as a narrator was also universally recognised.

At the head table, a small team, Andy Irvine, Paul Milde, Bruce Spinks and Peter Crozier answered 18 questions correctly. Two of the dance tempo questions were right, but  the 1979 Movie featuring Ravel’s Bolero, Dudley Moore and Bo Derek was not Peter Pan.
These guys were having a good time. There were only four at the money table, Jim Gibson, David Benn, John Hawkins and Doug Conkey, but they must have been quality, because they came second with 27 points, and  had all the dance tempo questions wrong. The mind boggles imagine  a group of British Sailors in the 18th century dancing a cha cha to a hornpipe jig.
At the outset of the Quiz, this table would have been the top seeds, in tennis parlance. A PDG, Police super, a bellringer and a Greek – all the bases were covered. The team consisted of Frank Fuller, Laurie Blowes, Colin Mercer, John Egan, James Hamilton, Michael Georgiou, Peter Green and Tim Macgillycuddy. They achieved 23 points, but Mick Jagger did not record “GLORIA”
This photo shows two accountants, and a Bank Manager, so we can conduct serious research into Musical knowledge across industry groups. The score from this team was 17, reduced to 16.5 on countback, so a solid performance on cricket knowledge was a consolation. The others on this team were Wal Paton,  Mal Robertson, Ken Taylor, Kevin Moffat and David Byfield.
Our winners, with a breathtaking score of 33, were the team who identified as "team Smith." Helping John were Geoff Breust, Bob Willis, Peter Mackinnon, James Ross and Hugh Campbell. These guys have been watching the TV dance shows, all the tempo questions right, no Pasa Doble when they should be doing the Tango, and hornpipes only on the deck. John Smith spent the duration of the quiz on his phone, and the stewards enquiry will be ongoing.
The last group had a score of 17, getting them off the bottom rung, but only just. Travis Downie, Greg Goldspink, Geoff Hamilton, David Foster, Rick Priest and Neil Pinto were good on Dance tempos, but missed out on Musical theatre.

John Gray presented the segment -

"Sharing Rotary with New Members"
Are you aware of the responsibility or obligation most Rotarians fail to perform? Paying their dues? Attending meetings? Contributing to the club service fund? Participating in club events and projects? No-none of these!
Of all the obligations a person accepts when joining a Rotary club the one in which most Rotarians fail is "sharing Rotary." The policies of Rotary International clearly affirm that every individual Rotarian has an "obligation to share Rotary with others and to help extend Rotary through pro posing qualified persons for Rotary club membership." It is estimated that less than 30 percent of the members of most Rotary clubs have ever made the effort to propose a new member. Thus, in every club, there are many Rotarians who readily accept the pleasures of being a Rotarian without ever sharing that privilege with another qualified individual.
The Rotary policy on club membership states: "In order for a Rotary club to be fully relevant to its community and responsive to the needs of those in the community, it is important and necessary that the club include in its membership all fully qualified prospective members located within its territory" One merely has to glance through the yellow pages of the local telephone directory to realize that most clubs have not invited qualified members of all businesses and professions into Rotary
Only a Rotarian may propose a customer, neighbor, client, supplier, executive, relative, business associate, professional or other qualified person to join a Rotary club. Have you accepted your obligation to share Rotary? The procedures are very simple, and everyone must know at least one person who should belong to Rotary.

The January Farmers market was held last Saturday, and it was a quiet affair - some stallholders expected typical January conditions and planned to have a break. Others were put off by wet and blustery conditions on Friday, and the threat of further rain. Saturday morning dawned dry and cool, but the decisions were already made. The result was that our team of eleven Rotarians erected fourteen tents, and ran a market that grossed $667.95, and we banked $512.95.
Ken Taylor reported that a new charging system applied, and that an advance booking was all that saved us from a deficit - Junee Licorice to the rescue.

The team assembled for the day was:
Ken Taylor, Chris Metcalfe, Alan Eldridge, Tim Macgillycuddy, Greg Goldspink, Travis Downie, Frank Fuller, Geoff Hamilton, Mal Robertson, Nick Leywood, Franzi Treber
