Rotary Information

Greg Conkey gave the Rotary Information on Tuesday.  He emailed a copy of his talk to the bulletin Editor, and it is printed below:  
 
I would like to talk about  two great organisations bound together by one great city …. The city of Chicago ..
Most .. if not all of us …  know that Rotary was started by Paul Harris in 1905 when he got together with three business acquaintances on February 23  …. 16 years later Rotary had spread to six continents including Australia ….
Today Rotary has 34,800 member clubs, 1.2m members and operates in 200 countries ..
 
Twelve years after Rotary was formed in Chicago another man ….. Melvin Jones …. Asked a simple question ….
“What if people put their talents to work improving communities ….”
Next year the organisation he founded will celebrate its 100th birthday ,,,,,  it’s larger than Rotary …. It has 1.4m members and serves in 210 countries ….in Australia the organisation has 26,000 members …
The organisation is Lions International …
 
So the two greatest service clubs in the world were started by two men with vision in Chicago …

 

Sergeants Session

John Gray was Tuesday's Sergeant and he started with a fine to Peter Green and then assigned him the task of carrying the box.  

He advised everyone to contribute and then said that since we were a male only club, perhaps we should reflect on some interesting British history about Men's clubs.  

He read from his notes about the Garrick Club founded in 1831 for actors and gentlemen of refinement.  Then he spoke of the Whites club founded in 1693 from which ex-Prime Minister David Cameron had been a member for 15 years and resigned.

He concluded with a story about the Boodles club.  In a historic vote, Boodles member’s wives were allowed to not only eat in the dining room but also sleep in the historic upstairs rooms.  Accordingly a Boodles member questioned that if wives were allowed upstairs, what about mistresses?    The board met in and emergency session and announced that…”Yes, mistresses would be allowed to sleep upstairs...with their illicit partner at the club...as long as they were married to a current member" .

Last year, the event raised $1000, and Benny would love to see that, plus this year.
