This week’s meeting
We were privileged to have the District Governor for D9705, Andrea Grosvenor, attend our meeting. Andrea reported that this region had 1800 members belonging to 72 clubs. These clubs included 4 Rotaract, 4 Interact and even 2 Earlyact clubs, the latter being for young children. She is concentrating the Region’s activities in the areas of family and domestic violence (co-ordinating with local police), mental health and disaster response. These activities will utilise the existing resources of RAWCS, ROMAC and Australian Rural Health (ARH). She nominated the Rotarians against malaria as her favourite service program.
She also sees the current focus on regionalisation is important in maximising the power of the currently falling membership numbers. She stressed that regionalisation will not affect the independence of the existing clubs but is meant as a pilot program designed to assist smaller clubs to maintain and increase the scope of their service activities by combining with other clubs in their district.
In closing she reminded members that the District Conference will be in Canberra on 20-22nd October and asked our support.
Gears and Beers briefing.Phil Mcintosh gave members a detailed briefing on the activities and organisation planned for next Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
He circulated operations manuals for members to follow, both in the gardens and out on the roads, and reminded all that the police have the power to stop all activities if there is a breach of road rules.
Friday night will feature the AFL Grand Final pre-party. The actual AFL Grand Final will be broadcast from 2.50 pm in the Victory Gardens on Saturday and expects that Saturday evening will attract a big crowd. He is concerned about the forecast for 330C on Sunday for the main events, where over 2,000 riders are expected. He asked members to make every effort to make all visitors feel welcome and comfortable at all times and asked all members to wear their white polo shirts so they are easily identifiable.
He reminded members that Daylight Saving ends on Saturday night.
