Our meeting was an evening meeting at Romanos and attendance was lower than usual for our regular meeting. President Darren opened the meeting with a vote of thanks for the many blessings we enjoy. He then welcomed a number of guests: Leah Andersen, Carolyn Murray, Sandra Legge and David Miekeljohn.

Leah and Steve Andersen who recently won first prized for their leg ham at the Royal Easter Show!

Carolyn and Paul Murray enjoyed the evening meeting.

Sandra Legge and Michael Knight made a trio of couples at our meeting.

GEARS AND BEERS AND THE RFS
A feature of tonight's meeting was the presentation of a cheque to the Downside Rural Fire Service for their assistance at our annual cycle event, Gears and Beers.
Past President Paul Murray spoke about his long association with David Miekeljohn Captain of the Downside Rural Fire Service branch. They first met during the 1994 bushfires in the Blue Mountains where Paul drove a fire tanker and David was a crew member.
PP Phil McIntosh Chair of Gears and Beers speaks of the terrific assistance the RFS provides to Gears and Beers before presenting a cheque for $1000 to Downside RFS Captain Davd Miekeljohn.

David told us that the Downside RFS started in 1949. Max Miekeljohn and Jack Chamberlain were the initiators. David was a Rotary Group Study Exchange participant in 1993 and traveled to Maine and New Hampshire. He appreciates the work Rotary does and was happy to help with Gears and Beers. Firies love spraying water around don't they?

RFS lays down water to reduce dust and make for an interesting experience
Riders splash through Hooligans creek and make their way up a slippery slope, enjoying the experience!

ROTARY MEAL DEAL
Steve and Leah Andersen, Geoff and Ros Breust and Pat Ingram enjoyed Roast Pork. Photographer Carol?
The menu was: Baked Camembert Cheese dusted in Ash and wrapped in Prosciutto; Main, Pork Belly, Sweet Potato Puree, Asparagus; Dessert, Violet Crumble Cheese Cake.

TAIWAN EARTHQUAKE

Many of the members know our former exchange student Irene Chung from Taiwan, as she recently sent us the candy that was distributed to the members.  Taiwan has suffered a serious earthquake and Carolyn checked with Irene to find out if everything was OK.  She said that she and her family are fine and thanks for the concern.
Cheers,
Paul and Carolyn

WOLLUNDRY CHARTER PRESIDENT GRAHAM HORNIBROOK

Dear Doug,
As usual, I enjoy and appreciate your bulletin.  Thank Paul for his note reminding me this copy is generated especially for me.  Is it because I am out in the cold about which your guest speaker spoke?  He reminded me of the time Tina and Michael Kennedy spoke of their travelling on the supply ship which visited our outposts in Antarctica.  Tina’s description of the waves that towered the ship remain with me still.
I’m doing a bit of a battle with cancer at present which has invaded my neck.  After five attempts with the knife I start ray treatment late this month with good prospects forecast. I am otherwise keeping very well. I have to be in peak form by August when my new next door neighbours arrive to take up residence.  John and Norma Grey will separate me from the next villa down the road where the notable Frank Fuller lives.
My Betty, at 90, still gets her pusher out daily for a health walk but she is greatly slowed down by failing hearing and memory loss. I don’t need a pusher yet for stability while I enjoy the pleasure of outdoors.
So that is how this 87 years old former Wollundry Charter President is coping currently.  He sends his best wishes to all old and present club members, reminding them of the privilege it is to be a member of Wollundry Rotary Club, Wagga Wagga.
Sincerely, Graham Hornibrook
