Wollundry Rotary
Meeting 16th January 2024
New member inducted
A new member, John Horton, was formally inducted at this meeting. John is a former Rotarian from Harden, where he was Mayor and also served as a councillor on the Hilltop Shire Council. He was nominated by Michael Knight, after they met by chance on the way to a Wollundry Club meeting. John was surveying the Wagga Rotary Clubs with the intention of joining one but was “so impressed by the commitment and success of Wollundry” that he decided to join after one meeting and has regularly attended our meeting since. John very enthusiastic about Rotary and how he can contribute to our club. Welcome John.

BOARD MEETING
The President reported on Monday’s Board Meeting. There were three items to note:
- The club’s decision to return the monthly market to the original Civic Theatre precinct was confirmed by the Board.
- The Board approved a Peace Day nomination for Karen Kime. Karen is a semi retired Anglican Priest and community worker who has an impressive list of achievements including being the first female aboriginal to become an Archdeacon in the Anglican Church. We hope to have Karen as a guest speaker in the near future.
- The members unanimously supported the Board’s decision to reinstate the Noel Barnes Scholarship and offer it as an assistance grant to needy students in seven Wagga High Schools. It consists of an annual grant of $550 to students needing assistance to complete their last two years of HSC or TAFE, so that each student will receive $550 a year for years 11 and 12. The students will be chosen by their headmaster, based on need and ability.
David Golland, chair of the Scholarship Committee, spoke to the members about the award, stating that it will fill the “youth gap” in our funding which resulted from the closure of the overseas student program. Other members spoke in support, and also stated that the scholarship could be used as a flagship program to raise the Club’s reputation in the Wagga community. Please contact Geoff Breust if you have a travel or other experience you would like to share with the club.
