As our schedule guest speaker was a late withdrawal, President Andy persuaded one of our visitors, Duncan Farquhar to give a brief overview of his involvement in the wine industry.
Duncan's career began in Tasmania and he still has a small one acre vineyard operating with a friend's cooperation in the north east of the state. Duncan came to Wagga a few years ago to take up a government position as National Extension Manager for the Wine Industry. When funding for the position ended Duncan became the "stay at home dad". This position he has filled with a great amount of skill as his young daughter, Ella attend the meeting and was a delight and extremely well behaved!
Duncan explained that up until 1860 Tasmania had a thriving wine industry, but it virtually disappeared for 100 years. It has now re-emerged stronger than ever and is worth over $150 million to the Tasmania economy. To Duncan a wine must have the right mix of "Art, Science & Sport". The Harrison's Pinot Noir he produces is totally at the boutique end of the market, and is available in Wagga at Creche Restaurant and The Roundabout Restaurant. Tim Magillycuddy gave the vote of thanks on behalf of the club and presented Duncan with a vintage bottle of Olive Oil!
