Melbourne Sunrise Probus Mildura Get Away 27th August - 31st August, 2018

August saw 22 MSPC members heading to the bustling regional city of Mildura.
Gary and Rhonda Hudak organised and hosted a tour that showcase the rich cultural diversity their hometown.

The appeal and rustic sophistication of “Stefano’s” is legendary.
In a cellar lined with clothed tables, Stefano de Pieri marries Mildura produce with Italian traditions innovation in wine and tradition in food define the “Stefano’s" experience.

Stefano was in the kitchen and warmly greeted the group as one would old friends.. The dinner was fabulous and certainly a fabulous start to our Mildura experience.

The excursion to Lake Mungo was unforgettable.

The subtle landscape of Mungo and Willandra Lakes is a precious window that allowed the group to look deep into the past of old Australia.

Learning about the forward thinking and drive of the Chaffey Brothers added a new understanding of the legacy that resulted in Australia’s first irrigation colony.

Visits to Chateau Mildura, a National Trust listed building and Rio Vista Historic House, the elegant, family home of WB Chaffey and his family allowed the group to explore the rich heritage of Mildura.

A cruise on PS Melbourne, an original wood fired steamer, through Lock 11 and along the Murray a saw the group enjoy some excellent bird life, as well as dream of a holiday on a luxurious houseboat.

We discovered Wentworth, just across the border in NSW, where the highlight was definitely the most delicious, freshly baked vanilla slices from Hudak’s Bakery, eaten ‘en plain air’ at the confluence of the Murray and the Darling Rivers!

A visit to Murray Pink Salt Mine, followed by lunch and a fascinating talk at Varapodio Estate, an olive oil enterprise really were highlights. Local wines were tasted at Trentham Estate.

A Dinner Cruise, aboard PV Rothbury, allowed the group to again enjoy the sights of the tranquil Murray River and as night fell, a spectacular sunset.  Relaxing to the reflections of the majestic river red gums and flood lit riverbank, was a lovely end to our stay in Mildura.

A sincere ‘Thank You’ to Gary and Rhonda and to Alison and Phil Stone of “Discover Mildura”!
