THE EARLY AERODROMES OF MELBOURNE AND THE ORIGINS OF ESSENDON AIRPORT

The Origins and Early History of Essendon Airport:
Why was Essendon selected at the site of Melbourne’s airport?   How did the aerodrome evolve, who were the early tenants there, and how did it survive as Melbourne’s airport for fifty years?   It is an interesting slice of Australia’s aviation history.

The Early Privately Operated Aerodromes of Melbourne:
From 1919 to 1921, civil aviation in Australia was conducted in an environment of uncontrolled private enterprise, without any government regulations in place.   An obvious need was for places to launch and land aircraft, and buildings in which to assemble and serviced flying machines.
