UBC Agape Street Mission

Christopher Sui introduced their new President Nanomi. We funded them last year for $1500 which came from gaming money and they had to use this for hard assets like back packs and things. They came to thank us for that. They started their street work two years ago working with the homeless. It has taken a lot of understanding on their part to build a relationship with them. Last year we had 123 students going out on to the streets to help us with our outreach.
Now we are running a regular 3 days a week on our runs. We use groups for two to three for our own protection. We often start at the Youth center at Burrard and Davie and distribute bag lunches with things like Granola bars in them. This is an ice breaker and gives us the chance to talk to them. The Youth Center store our food items for us. That has been a great help.
Nanomi is a third year student in International studies. She likes making contact with people and has worked with the Portland Hotel Society.
Having made contact with the street people we can talk about Housing, medical and Dental care for them. We have put together a package of help available for them.
We can provide an amount of certainty in services available.
We are active listeners.
We speak to an average of 30 people a shift. Sometimes up to 60.
