starlight*starbright Childrens Foundation

Our speakers, Heather Burnett and Jared Brick were introduced by Bruce Campbell. Heather is the BC Regional Coordinator for starlight*starbright children's foundation. Heather was here to thank us for the donation of $5000.00 which was used to purchase a Starlight Fun Centre for Vancouver Children's Hospital, to be placed in their day surgery or ophthalmology departments. A fun centre is a mobile entertainment unit containing a flat screen TV, DVD Player and a Nintendo Game Cube System. They can roll right up to the side of a hospital bed and Jared, a cancer survivor, was able to tell us of his personal experiences using the centre, when he was an 11 year old cancer patient. The centres provide a bright spot in the day of a young patient and are in great demand. They are just one of the many programs which Starlight Starbright offers to meet the needs of children fighting serious illness. Our own Rotary members, Donna Webb and Frederick Dyck are active volunteers for the foundation and Susan Burak served on the Board last year. Our projects committee will be looking into opportunities for our members to become part of a "hands on" program called Great Escapes and will let us know what would be involved. They have provided us with much printed material outlining their various projects and it will be available for your perusal at our meetings. Glen Millar thanked our speakers.
