The speaker was introduced by Margaret Evans. Dick Drew is a past
District Governor who transferred to Duncan from Hamilton in 1979. He
was twice named "Rotarian of the Year" and was Centennial Governor of
District 5020 . During this year the district won eight zone awards, the
most ever won by a district in one year. While attending the Rotary
International Convention in Australia in 2003 he was fascinated by the
shelterbox display. He brought the program to Canada, and it is run by
Alan J Lomax in Ladysmith B.C.
Dick asked us to think about helping Shelterbox and showed us a moving
film about the program. Shelter Box is a Rotary International disaster
relief project designed to save the lives of thousands by providing
provisions to help people displaced by natural disasters and political
conflicts. The box contains enough supplies to accommodate 10 people for
three months. Each box contains a 10 person tent, 10 sleeping bags,
cooking supplies, water purification tablets, tools and other life-saving
essentials. The large heavy duty plastic boxes can be used as a table or
baby bed and are designed with a spout for carrying and distributing
water.Shelter Boxes have been sent to New Orleans, Afghanistan,
Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Somalia. The need is great. Each box costs
$1150 Canadian and includes delivery with notification of where in the
world your box helped. For more information their website is
