A happy lunch time: we were very pleased to have presented to us the students to whom the scholarship grants were to be given. The successful applicants were Lisa Oyang (from the Adult Education Centre), Calista Abuan (Prince of Wales), Angela Maries Imbuido (John Oliver), Kathryn Nguyen (John Oliver), Cathy Le (John Oliver), Tammy May (Killarney), Tarmil Gil (Fraser Academy) and Charlleigh Wareing (Fraser Academy). To your learned correspondent, who had the privilege of interviewing those from John Oliver, it was gratifying to see what qualities were demonstrated by the various speeches of thanks: it might be a common conception that in the rich society in which we exist, need would be a barely known quantity. The stories told by these candidates however told a different story, perhaps one characterized by parents whose means are limited but whose ambitions for their offspring often amount to the exraordinary.
The final note, one that was obviously warranted in these circumstances, was provided by Lexi. All but one of the successful candidates were female, she noted, and the majority of them had aspirations to get into the biomedical (in the broadest sense) field, from where, of course, Lexi herself could speak with assurance.
Our actual forecast speaker unfortunately failed to appear, but we were fortunate in having as a guest John Bathurst, our incoming Assistant District Governor. He is from the Vancouver Club, and of course came to us almost fresh from the District Conference, a gathering that he was pleased to note included a large proportion of Interacters. He also stressed the effect of such a collection of people who are there to contribute: the frisson generated by so many such people compel others to feel that they have to work that much harder to achieve the objectives set out by Rotary generally. One suspects that we will be seeing John again … though he has some 50 Clubs within his bailiwick!
