Recap: Speaker Series with Dr. Ricardo Arredondo, Consul General of the Argentine Republic
in Vancouver since 2021
It was a pleasure to welcome Dr. Ricardo Arredondo to speak to the members and guests of the Rotary Club Vancouver.
The room was filled with many members and a lot of guests! We'd like to express our thanks to all who have joined us for this meeting, including a Rotarian visiting Vancouver all the way from Hong Kong.
Dr. Arredondo's opening question was: "Is Uncertainty New"?
He gave an overview of the historical context of uncertainty in global geopolitics, touching on the international liberal order post World War II, the Cold War, its impact and the Post-Cold War period.
What are today's crises?
Acceleration of weaknesses in multilateralism, the impact of 9/11, Iraq War, the 2007 Financial Crisis; Globalization and all the challenges that come with it & an everyday Shifting Global Landscape.
In this presentation, Dr. Arredondo spoke about the paths forward, including Strengthening Multilateralism, Technological Governance and Sustainable Development, among others.
Our members and guests were captivated by his presentation, yet it had to come to an end with Dr. Arredondo sharing his final reflections about this captivating topic:
History is dynamic and irreversible; its engine is change.
The diffusion of power, economic interdependence, technological disruption, environmental challenges and social movements are reshaping the global landscape.
Navigating uncertain terrain requires a multi-faced approach that combines resilience, innovation and cooperation.
It is crucial to embrace the principles of multialteralism, inclusivity and sustainability.
New mechanisms and institutions are required to provide a coordinated and multilateral response to challenges.
Dr. Ricardo Arredondo concluded his presentation with one of his favourite quotes by Juan Rulfo:
"Nos Salvamos juntos o nos hundimos seperados"
"We save ourselves together or we sink separately"
The Rotary Club of Vancouver, its members and guests sincerely thank Dr. Arredondo for coming out to speak to the group this week.
