There is better and more media than ever before. Journalists are better educated. Yet public trust is at an all-time low. How did media lose trust of the audience and what can be done about it?
Kirk LaPointe is publisher and editor-in-chief of Business in Vancouver and vice-president of editorial for the Glacier Media chain of publications. He teaches ethics and leadership as an adjunct professor in the Journalism, Writing and Media program at UBC. He has been a media executive for much of his four-decade career. He ran CTV News, The Hamilton Spectator and Southam News. He was a host on CBC Newsworld and was later CBC's ombudsman. He helped start National Post as its first executive editor. He was Ottawa Bureau Chief and later the General News Editor of The Canadian Press. He moved to Vancouver in 2003 to become the Managing Editor of the Vancouver Sun. He later was a talk show host on Roundhouse Radio and he ran for mayor in 2014, finishing second.

A public toilet A “comfort station” in downtown Chicago. Public restrooms were typically found only in saloons at that time, and unaccompanied women were not permitted to enter saloons.
No dues There were no dues at the first Rotary Club. The group voted there would be no dues and all club expenses would be paid from 50-cent fines.

Thank you to all of you who came to enjoy the companionship of your fellow club Rotarians, and to those who logged in virtually.
Reminder to everyone to update the committee sign up sheet. Consider joining a committee you haven't been involved with before. All members should volunteer for at least one committee. New members are asked to attend a minimum of three different committees (all committees would be best) before committing to at least one. New ideas are welcome, as is demonstrated by the new Environmental committee that already has three members signed on.

Bill Schulz, our Sunshine Committee person, let everyone know that Nathan Hesketh has had a bicycling accident and is resting at home.
Rene Abi-Rached, on behalf of the Community Service Committee, shared that we will be showing a short video from the ODD Squad next week. The ODD Squad is one the CSC's and YSC's chosen organization to support.
Gerry Glazier shared a wonderful tradition that his grand daughter's high school takes part in. On the first day of school for the graduating class, the whole class gathers on the football field to watch the sunrise together, then at the end of the year they stay to watch the sunset together. A fabulous. memorable way to bookend their final year together.

Program:
Jim Evans introduced returning speaker, Don Chapman, founder of Lost Canadians Society. Done spoke about the incredible, flummoxing truths about individuals who need to fight tooth and nail to secure Canadian citizenship, including himself.
As also stated on the Lost Canadian Society’s website homepage, “The greatest attribute of Canadians is that they are so wonderfully nice. The greatest problem with Canadians is that they are so wonderfully nice.” We just are not good at standing up for one another.
Why aren’t Canadians speaking out
Jackie, who joined the meeting with Don, was a child of a union between her British mother and Canadian soldier father. She came to Canada with her mother to be with her father when she was two. However, the government said her father was not Canadian despite him being born in Toronto in 1911. Therefore, Jackie was not Canadian either. She is now having terrible trouble righting the wrong so she can collect her pension, after having spent her entire adult life working and paying taxes in Canada.
WWI & WWII vets – govt saying they were not Canadian citizens. Why is this the case? Think about this on Remembrance Day. It is so incredibly absurd. The federal government continues to fight against righting this wrong. Prime Minister and Minister of Citizenship separately issued statements celebrating the anniversary of Canadian Citizenship starting in 1947
A bit of history:
The KKK drove many East Indians and Chinese out of the U.S. Many came to Vancouver. Sep 4th 1907, Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier sent out Mackenzie King to Vancouver to see what happened. King blamed the Chinese, authored the exclusion act, and enforced it.
In 1908 King with a friend went to England and made the statement that he wanted Canada to be a white only country. At the end of WWII King was prime minister, his friend head of supreme court; they issued under the war measures act, cancelled the citizenship of all Asian/Chinese Canadians. Instead of deporting them which he couldn’t do because it was by then internationally recognized as a crime against humanity, King did the next best thing – canceled their citizenship. He enforced that citizenship is a privilege not a right. Almost 4,000 Chinese Canadians were affected.
Reference Nicholas v Canada – a Haida gentlemen who chose to be enfranchised in 1946 to protect his family and children from horrors such as residential schools, fighting to have the right to be recognized as Indigenous and Canadian. Enfranchisement is a legal process whereby First Nations people terminate their Indian status to become full Canadian citizens. This process was a key factor of the Canadian government’s assimilation policies for aboriginal peoples under the Indian Act. (CLICK HERE for a brief explanation.) Those who enfranchised were expected to abandon their indigenous identity and cultural beliefs to become Canadian citizens.
The question is: How could the Canadian government give citizenship in 1946 if it wasn’t a program until 1947? Enfranchising had occurred since confederation, that has been acknowledged.
Patrick, another speaker who joined Don & Jackie, is dealing with the reality of his Canadian citizenship as a 2nd class citizenship. He does not share the same rights as other Canadians. His children were born oversees in China, they have been stateless. His grandfather was Irish, Ireland allowed them to be Irish citizens there. Patrick was born in Canada, however, because of the nonsensical citizenship rules, his children would not be allowed to be Canadian. He would have been better to have been brought into Canada as an immigrant rather then spending most of his life in Canada.
It took 13 years for Patrick’s daughter to get her citizenship. If his wife gets citizenship as an immigrant, she will have more rights than Patrick who was born here. Unbelievable!
Canadians do not know much about this subject. The mainstream media do not address it.
Lost Canadians do not get big enough “likes” to follow the stories. Canada is not alone when it comes to treating people unjustly. In England they have the Windrush scandal (CLICK HERE for more info). Many other countries have similar tragic stories.
We are all part of the Canadian family. Citizenship gives us a common identity. You, your grandchildren, great grandchildren may be affected if the issue is not corrected. Please speak up! Add your voice to rectify the wrongs of our past. Work to ensure Canadian citizenship is an enduring right not a privilege that can be revoked at the whim of the government of the day as Mackenzie King did.
The laws are so convoluted that many politicians in office don’t understand what citizenship actually is.
In closing, though unbelievable, it’s true: the hardest country to immigrate to Canada from, is Canada!
