President’s Announcements:
Welcome to our guests, new and returning, as well as our own members who have taken time out of busy schedules to attend. We are grateful to see new faces, remember guests are ALWAYS welcome at our meetings.
Reminder to all that the member survey emailed to you is still accepting responses. Sincere thanks if you've already submitted your completed form. The feedback collected will help the Board as they work to make decisions moving forward. The more information they have, the better the decisions will be in reflecting member concerns and suggestions.
Secretary's announcements:
reminders of upcoming events/meetings (see above)
birthdays, member club anniversaries, wedding anniversaries (see above)
Members' moments and special presentations:
Jaewon Kim & Ally Potel were formally welcomed to the club as our newest members. Very excited to get to know you both better and have you as part of our Rotary family!
Kendall Jessiman as chair of the nominating committee announced the slate for the 2024-25 Board. Thank you to those who have agreed to stand. Thus far:
Stephanie Lawton, Director 2024-26
Richard Higgins, Director 2024-26
The 3rd 2024-26 Director position is currently open. If you, or you know of anyone who would be interested please contact Kendall.
Bill Schulz, Sergeant at Arms 2024-2025
President Elect open.
Sandra Lowe will be making another Rotary humanitarian trip to the Dominical Republic in January. They have doctors and lawyers going but are in need of dentists. If you can pass the word along to any dentists you know who may be interested please do. The commitment would be to leave January 13th for about 5 days. Sandra is also looking for an old piece of luggage she'll fill with art supplies to bring along and leave there. If you can help in any way - dentists or luggage, please contact Sandra.
Program - MEMBER FOCUS:
Members chatted at their tables about, well anything they wanted, and reported back to the group. Here is what we heard:
Suggestion: when we have guests, it would be great for our members to share with them just what Rotary is. Many guests really don't know much, if anything, about Rotary when they first come to visit. Talk about what kind of work we do and the impact we have both locally and globally.
Request: looking for fundraising ideas for our youth service committee. We've held an auction for a couple of years now. Looking for other, perhaps outside the box, suggestions. If you have ideas, contact youth@rotaryvancouver.org to let them know.
Request: Traditionally we have participated in an annual joint meeting with our Rotaract clubs. The next one will be in February 2024. Looking for ideas on the format for this get together. If you have any ideas, again, contact youth@rotaryvancouver.org.
Some questions came up that need some discussion:
How do we make our weekly member meetings more vibrant and energetic, thereby improving engagement?
How can we better promote DEI in an organic way but purposeful way? Suggestion: have members who represent different groups speak to us about it.
What activity can we, as a club, get behind to aid hearing impaired (our club's focus)? As an example, for visually impaired, there has been a fun acoustic bingo event. Can something similar be created for hearing impaired - needs to be fun and engaging?
Suggestion: have a number of small networking events with targeted groups so maximize benefit.
Suggestion: hold inter-club new member receptions/trainings.
Thank you to all. This information will be passed along to the Board to add to their database of member feedback.
Meeting adjourned with a toast to member dialogue.
