Reversing Global Warming: An Introduction to Project Drawdown

Sandi Goldie & Jim Bronson are from Southern Oregon. They have been leading workshops introducing the Drawdown approach to climate change for some time. The approach alters the conversation by focusing on solutions instead of problems. Reducing emissions is an opportunity rather than a burden. It is a chance to build a strong, clean and modern city with a vibrant economy fit for the 21st century, supporting a better, healthier and more prosperous society for all. The road to drawdown begins locally.

Over the past five years, Project Drawdown has brought together a qualified and diverse group of researchers from around the world to map, measure and model the 100 most substantive solutions to address climate change. The result of the study, as reported in the book Drawdown, edited by Paul Hawken, is a path forward that can roll back global warming within 30 years. According to Hawken, drawdown is that point in time when the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere begins to decline on a year-to-year basis.

The plan shows that humanity already has the means at hand. Nothing new needs to be invented, and the solutions come from a variety of sectors, including education, land use, food production, energy, transportation, building and city planning, and even the materials we use in our daily lives. In other words, there is a part to play for everybody.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Invocation of the week

"December is a time for warm hearts,
to welcome peace and set apart
a portion of our love and grace,
thankful for this special place,
thankful for those gathered here,
thankful for Rotary work, far and near.
"

Our Rotarians have proven once again what a generous group you are!

Thank you for bringing in your coats, hats, mitts for the Young Professional Division's coat drive for the Union Gospel Mission. Mark, Justin & Scott -- thank you for this great initiative and doing the heavy lifting (literally).

Thank you to our Rotarians also for stepping up so generously to help the Mom & her two boys through this extremely rough time after Dad was killed on a work site.  Thank you Katherine for bringing this tragic situation to our attention. We hope that our donations will bring some much needed smiles to this family.

Funding Rotary Club of Vancouver
Charitable Projects

Phil Webber's e-mail to all members related to year-end charitable giving to our Rotary Foundations, particularly the Vancouver Rotary Club Foundation, contained a link to the Club’s website.  Unfortunately the red “Donate to Rotary” button under the “Support Our Work” item in the right hand menu of our website was not functioning correctly.  Jack Zaleski has fixed the website so donations can now be made.

When you click on the red “DONATE TO ROTARY” button, you will be taken to a page where the names of our foundations, Vancouver Rotary Club Foundation, and Rotary Club of Vancouver Hearing Foundation, are mentioned and there is a short description of each.

Immediately below the name and description of each of the Foundations there is a "Donate online" button. Clicking on this button will take you to the Charitable Impact payment system. It will be clear that you are donating for the benefit of either the  Vancouver Rotary Club Foundation or the Rotary Club of Vancouver Hearing Foundation.

Lastly, if you are donating to the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International (TRF) through the Rotary International website, our International Service Committee would like you to select the “Annual Fund” option under the “Choose what you would like to support” box. Doing so ensures that 50 per cent of the contribution will be returned by the Rotary Foundation of RI to our District, to support Global Grants and District Grants.

Rotary Club of Vancouver takes full advantage of Global Grants and District Grants, but in getting that support, the District Officials look at our Club’s support of the TRF through the Annual Fund.  It is through the organized use of Global Grants and District Grants that the financial contributions of Rotary Club of Vancouver can be multiplied; sometimes many times over thus increasing the impact of the good work done by our International Service Committee.

Please note that Polio Plus is also an option and that your donation will be triple the amount you actually give since your gift is subject to a $2 for $1 match by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. However, Polio Plus gifts do not support all the other good work we do through the many projects of our International Service Committee.

Chair's Announcements:
  • Tis the season for giving and in that spirit, we have a couple of worthy causes to be highlighted today:
    • Thank you to the Young Professionals Division, Justin Emilio, Scott Stroshin, & Mark Zhou, for their coat drive initiative on behalf of the Union Gospel Mission and those in need on Vancouver's east side;
    • Katherine Copeland brought to our attention (as noted in today's Eventbrite invitation), a family who lost their husband/dad to a work accident recently. We are collecting donations that will be pooled to purchase groceries, gift certificates and gifts for the Mom and 2 young special needs boys. Thank you to the Youth and Community Service Committees for making sizable contributions as well as those members who have already contributed. You can make a donation today via Carolyn or contact her by the end of this week (Friday Dec 13th).
    • On a very happy note, Franco Gallo & his wife, Candice Claassen, welcomed baby Santiago (Santi) on December 5th. Baby and Mom are doing well.
