  • Peter Clarke led a group discussion about club fundraisers to support our youth programs. Below is his summary:

    Dear Rotarians,

Thank you for your participation in Tuesday’s discussion on whether we can support another event. There was no clear answer to the question asked, " Can our club support another fundraising event?", but there were some good ideas, thoughts, history and directions discussed. I think there is some more work to be done here.

    • Jack question: if Don Kavanagh's estate donation was to be used for youth programs, why was it put in the RCV Foundation with all of the restrictions that puts on using the funds?

The estate specified that the funds were to be put in the RCV Foundation so that they would receive a receipt (tax reasons).

    • Gabby question: can Interact & Rotaract clubs be more involved in the process? Perhaps even taking a lead?

Rotaract clubs are always and have always been invited to be active participants in the planning and execution; though perhaps we can investigate if they have ideas to pursue that we haven't thought about.

    • Verona comment: Our club has a signature event -- the Hearing Foundations Bike-a-thon. We members, request of our family, friends and colleagues that they support this event through pledges & donations. It is not reasonable for us to ask these same contacts for more support of other events. There is definite burnout in this regard.

Suggestion: can some of the proceeds from the Bike-a-thon be shared? a percentage going to support our youth programs?

    • Tom comment: In 1922 Rotary hosted a successful casino event but were criticized because it was felt that gambling did not reflect family values that Rotary holds dear. In 1924 an ice show was put on as a fundraiser, "Ice Carnival". It was very successful and played through WW2. In the 1950s the VRC Foundation was formed to invest a large portion of the funds raised.

Suggestion: approach Disney who owns Ice Capades now with the request to put on an extra show that Rotary can receive the net proceeds from.

    • Paul suggestion: think outside the box, do not be limited by thoughts & ideas of traditional type fundraising events. Strike a committee of creative open-minded individuals who will come together to brainstorm, much like they do in developing advertising campaigns. Have a safe space to come up with crazy ideas, one will lead to another, until something workable is identified.

    • Michael question/suggestion: Can we partner with another club or clubs to help host a successful event? Perhaps one that's already established but for which more help and support would be appreciated?

Observation: Our club has a unique makeup in that our members come from all over the lower mainland. Most clubs are neighbourhood based with members and related activities based in the communities they live in. Our demographic makes any event requiring a lot of volunteer support, e.g., the rib-fest put on in Port Moody, a challenge.

    • Keith suggestion: Use on-line resources, e.g., the Daily Hive (a digital publication with a local focus), to link brands for mutual benefit, for the purposes of philanthropy. Traditional methods of fundraising are certainly not the only way...

Conclusion: The formal part of the discussion appeared to stimulate many informal conversations after the meeting. This leads me to conclude that open discussion is a good thing and that there is more to discuss. From my perspective, whether we move forward with a new fundraising event or not members having opportunities to participate in our clubs direction is a positive step. I am proposing to the board to allow time for this type of conversation as we continue to openly question the status quo while adapting to a changing membership and world.

    Peter Clarke
    Past President (2013-14)

Meeting adjourned with a toast to at least coming up with a plan to do something.
