Donald J. Evans
Rotarian and District 5040 Governor

Don passed away suddenly on May 20, 2019 while in Cuzco, Peru and preparing to hike into Machu Picchu with his wife Deborah Sankey.

For over 32 years Don had been active in Rotary, a world-wide volunteer organization of business and community leaders dedicated to:
  • giving back to the local community;
  • providing international aid;
  • fostering peace; and
  • supporting business and the professions.

He was a Past President of the Rotary Club of Vancouver (2002-2003) and had held many different positions with his club. He had been active in Rotary District 5040 with Strategic Planning for numerous clubs and for the District itself.  He was also a member of the District Foundation Committee and a Rotary President Elect Training Seminar Trainer. Don was named Rotarian of the Year for District 5040 in 2014 and was District Governor for 2017-18.  As such, and as a volunteer, he was responsible for overseeing the operations of 50 Rotary clubs in British Columbia as far-flung as Prince Rupert, the Cariboo, Sunshine Coast, Pemberton and Greater Vancouver; paying at least one personal visit with his wife Deb to each club during the 12 months of his term as District Governor.  Don was a Rotary Paul Harris Society Member and a Major Donor to the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.  Both Don and his wife Deb were also Bequest Society Members of the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

Don was a graduate of Harvard Business School and established DJE Holdings Ltd. in 1998 following his retirement from BC Tel (now Telus) after 31 years with BC Tel in the telecommunications industry.  In the past 20 years his work in leadership skills and business strategy had taken him throughout North America, to China, to much of Europe, and to a unique project as part of the peace process in Northern Ireland which involved working with the Police Service on their leadership and conflict resolution skills.

In addition to his involvement in Rotary, Don was a Past Chair of the Board of E-Comm 911 (Emergency Communications for Southwest B.C.), and was also a long time member of the Vancouver Board of Trade.  He had a major passion for railways and railway preservation, and was President Emeritus of the West Coast Railway Association and a Director of the Association of Tourist Railways and Railway Museums.

He was awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002 for his active community involvement and was named 2005 Business Person of the Year by the Squamish Chamber of Commerce for his work with the West Coast Railway Heritage Park in that community. Recently, he was awarded the Caring Canadian Award which was presented March 4, 2016 by the Governor General of Canada (photo above).

A resident of North Vancouver, Don was married to wife Deb, has two children from a previous marriage and four grandchildren.  He enjoyed classic cars (a one owner 1967 Nova SS!) hiking, photography, cycling and playing piano.

Don will be sorely missed by his family, many friends and business acquaintances and by the many people in the community who were beneficiaries of his volunteer work and the work of the organizations in which he took a leadership role.

Last Meeting May 21, 2019

President, Brian Street chaired the meeting and gave the invocation.
Kayo Otake accompanied us on the piano for the singing of O Canada.
Joe Lopushinsky, Sergeant-at-Arms, introduced visitors and guests.

President's Announcements:
  • With a heavy heart we have been notified that Don Evans passed away in Peru. He was travelling with his wife, Deb, and experienced a fatal coronary. Kayo Otake played Abide With Me on the piano in Don's honour. See above commentary written by Past-President Phil Webber.
  • The Rotary World Help Network 400th container celebration was fantastic. There was a great turnout. Mark Busse was instrumental in organizing a film crew, interviews were had -- we are looking forward to a fantastic piece that can be used to market the RWHN and for us as the founding Rotary Club.
  • Franz Gehriger has received, on our Club's behalf, an invitation to attend a joint meeting, Friday May 24th at the Hotel Vancouver, with the Canadian Club. The speaker is Andrew Scheer, leader of the Conservative Party.
  • Milton Kiang is organizing another social evening for us. Tentative date & location: Friday June 14th at the Sylvia Hotel. More information will be forthcoming once confirmed.
  • A group of us will be heading to Germany for the RI Convention. Bring trading banners along to share. Safe travels.

Joan Posivy, provided the Secretary's announcements:
  • reminders of upcoming events/meetings (see above)
  • birthdays: Kamyar Asadibeiky May 23rd, Danielle Palumbo May 26th

  • wedding anniversaries: none this week

Special Program:
  • Tom Crean facilitated an open mic session providing our members with the opportunity to share thoughts and memories of Don Evans. (Brian taped it on his phone to share with Don's wife, Deb.) Some of the comments shared included:
    • Don was a shining light and beacon for us all.
    • Don helped changed the culture of the Rotary Club of Vancouver through the focus on goals.
    • Due to Don and the years of strategic planning for the Club, it led to being awarded the Rotary Club of the Year.
    • Don was destined to be President of Rotary International should he have chosen to pursue it, with tremendous support from all of us.
    • The Squamish Rail Society Roundhouse was built due to Don's efforts, despite the huge obstacles along the way. It now stands as a monument to Don for generations to come.
    • Don's had a a quiet and reflective leadership style that got people motivated to do what he thought was needed.
    • Don's view of inclusivity has led to great success of Rotary Clubs.
    • Don was an entertainer; he always led the Christmas sing-a-long on the piano, providing wonderful memories for those who participated.
    • Don was always, without fail, supportive and welcoming. He made sure to make people feel connected and special.

  • It is unanimous that Don will be sorely missed by anyone who met him. It is with some comfort to think that his legacy will be felt by generations to come. In closing, on behalf of our Club Deb, thank you for sharing your great man.

Meeting adjourned with a toast to our dear friend and fellow Rotarian, Don Evans.
