Upcoming Speakers and Meeting Programs

Tuesday Dec 10, 2024 CLUB Annual General Meeting

The club's AGM is scheduled for Tuesday Dec 10th during our regular member meeting. It's a short portion of our meeting but we really do need quorum, which is 1/3 of our active membership to attend in person.

While we understand that there are many reasons people cannot attend meetings in person on a regular basis, it would be greatly appreciated if those who are able to attend in person try to do so on December 10th.

The VRC Foundation and the RCV Hearing Foundation AGMs will follow directly after our regular meeting.

If you haven't already registered, click on the link below to do so now. Thank you!!

Franco Gallo, President, chaired the meeting and gave the invocation.
Joan Posivy, acting Secretary
Mindy Tulsi-Ingram, Sergeant at Arms

Chair’s Announcements:
  • Welcome to our guests, new and returning, as well as our own members who have taken time out of busy schedules to attend. We are grateful to see new faces, remember guests are ALWAYS welcome at our meetings.

  • Chris Motion presented information on this Giving Tuesday, about the Vancouver Rotary Club Foundation. Starting with how Giving Tuesday began, Chris went on to explain the difference between the three Rotary Foundations. One Rotary International Foundation, and the two Rotary Club of Vancouver Foundations. He also highlighted what the Foundation funds are used for -- supporting the projects and initiatives our members feel are important. Chris closed with how and why you can donate. CLICK HERE to view his slide presentation. If you have any questions at all about any of these foundations, contact Chris Motion, John Bathurst, or Jason Boudreau.

  • Paul Martin spoke briefly about the goals of the Board for the Foundation. Primarily it is to raise $100,000 this year of which we already have a commitment for $70,000 thanks to Charles Flavelle's bequeath & Stu Bird's donation from his family's Foundation. Paul also spoke about the Oscar Olsen Award that was created a couple of years ago. More to come at our next meeting on Dec. 10th.

Secretary's announcements:
  • Reminders of upcoming events/meetings (see above)
  • Birthdays, member club anniversaries, wedding anniversaries (see above)

Special Announcements & Members' Moments:
  • Congratulations to Bill Davidson who has been recognized with a lifetime achievement award in his field, accounting. Bill founded Davidson & Company LLP in 1984 with a vision of a service-oriented practice. He has accomplished that and so much more. This award is well deserved Bill with all that you do to support your community, both professionally and in the realm of volunteering. Your generous nature and commitment to service is a great example for us all.

Program:

Rohan Aurora introduced speaker, Tamara Vrooman, an inspiring leader who has made a profound impact on business, community, and sustainability in Canada. Tamara currently serves as the President and CEO of Vancouver International Airport, where she is pioneering efforts to make YVR one of the world’s most sustainable and community-focused airports. Prior to her current position, she transformed Vancity into North America’s first carbon-neutral financial institution, setting new standards for values-based banking and economic inclusivity. She also serves as Chancellor of Simon Fraser University. Tamara is a recipient of the Order of British Columbia and numerous other awards, she stands as one of Canada’s most respected and visionary leaders.

Paul Martin facilitated a fire-side chat with Tamara, where she spoke about many aspects of her professional life and accomplishments. What came across very strongly was that Tamara is very humble and gracious. She is an inspiration to so many, especially women, that glass ceilings can be broken and goals can be achieved.

To close the meeting, Franco Gallo presented Tamara with a Paul Harris Fellow Award in recognition of all that she has done, and continues to do, to make our world a better place.

We are very grateful that Tamara took the time out of her schedule to talk to us. Thank you!!
