Topic Title: "Creating Connections: Initiatives, Impact and Progress in Vancouver Schools"
The Vancouver School Board (VSB) services more than 50,000 students with a budget of approximately $750 million. Join us to learn more about advancing strategic plan priorities, through initiatives including those supported by community partners like the Rotary Club. Board. Victoria will share key updates about activities underway at VSB, including progress on the Coal Harbour Elementary School multi-use build and the construction of a new school in Olympic Village, both significant projects aimed at accommodating enrolment demands as well as other key initiatives underway in Vancouver schools.
"Victoria works in Environmental Consulting, where she supports environmental management in land development and contaminated sites. Victoria also brings years of board experience as VP, Information for the Environmental Managers Association of BC and a demonstrated commitment to the community, having volunteered with the Vancouver Women’s Crisis Centre since 2011. Together, this experience has provided Victoria with a strong foundation for leadership on the Vancouver School board. Victoria holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a Masters of Business Administration. Together her academic training, professional experiences, and community engagement have fostered a strong belief in a foundation of childhood learning to continual, extended learning through opportunity and support." Jessica Smith & Lisa Chlysta-Adehl were formally welcomed as the newest members of our club. We are looking forward to getting to know you both better as you participate in club activities. Welcome!!
Gerry Glazier, on behalf of the Youth Services Commitee, presented Mitra Tsan with a $5,000 cheque. The funds will be used to support the Britannia Boys Basketball team, helping to provide young men with positive influences and building leadership skills within their community.
Ally Potel promoted the Ride for Hearing. This year's goal is to raise $300,000, through 3 different levels of sponsorship. July will be upon us in no time, so everyone is asked to take action now. Sign up to ride, whether it be for the full ride, the family ride, individually or with a team. If you prefer to support the event in other ways, you can pledge, donate, sponsor, as well as volunteering.
Nathan Hesketh thanked everyone who participated in a very successful 2024 Hoop-a-thon. In addition to individual pledges, our club donated $5,000 to the cause.
John Hayto promoted the upcoming 2024 President's Back to Black Dinner Gala on May 24th at the Terminal City Club. Cost is $125 per person. You can easily register by clicking on the poster above, or CLICK HERE. Reminder that if you purchase tickets before May 7, your name goes into a draw for a spectacular gift basket.
Sponsorships of $125 will receive recognition at every meeting until the event and in print at the event. If interested in sponsoring contact either Paul Martin or John Hayto.
Joan Posivy reminded everyone of the upcoming District Conference in Terrace. Jason added that the Board recently approved a $500 sponsorship for the conference.
Program - SPEAKER SERIES:
Franz Gehriger welcomed speakers Ken McCance & David Hoag from World Bicycle Relief Canada.
World Bicycle Relief is a catalyst for change, helping individuals, their families, and entire communities to thrive through The Power of Bicycles.
Education:
Bicycles help children get to school and stay in school. On two wheels, students in low-income regions can lift themselves and their families out of poverty.
Healthcare:
Bicycles enable health workers to visit more patients' homes, more often. Increased quality of care leads to improved health for entire communities.
Economic development:
Buffalo Bicycles provide greater carrying capacity, enabling farmers and entrepreneurs to transport more goods and save valuable time.
The speakers brought a 'Buffalo Bicycle' to the meeting for everyone to see. Currently, about 70% of bikes are being used by girls in northern Africa, as girls face the most challenges in these areas.
