Kayo Otake accompanied us on the piano for the singing of O Canada.
Peter Clarke, Sergeant-at-Arms, introduced visitors and guests.

President's Announcements:
  • A letter from RI General Secretary, John Hewko, expressing condolences on Don Evans' passing was received. CLICK HERE to read it.

Adriana Zylmans, provided the Secretary's announcements:
  • reminders of upcoming events/meetings (see above)
  • birthdays: Rhianon Chow July 18th, Peter Clarke July 19th, Ryan Crean July 21st
  • member anniversaries: Gabriel Kalfon 19 years
  • wedding anniversaries: Ralf & Margeurite Behringer 23 years July 19th, Gordon & Janis Esau 43 years July 17th

Special announcements and members' moments:
  • Jack Zaleski provided a brief update about the Bike-a-thon held on Sunday July 14th. It was another great event -- 166 riders registered, 156 actually rode, approximately $150,000 was raised. There were 23 teams that raised 75% of the funds, including Barbara Welsh's team, Chain Reaction, who raised $23,000.

The Don Water awards once again went to Barbara Welsh for raising over $20,000.
The team with the best performance went to Gears for Ears.
The fastest rider was Pierre St. Jacques, with Jane Lee only 4 seconds behind.
The fastest rider from our Club was Chris Motion with a time of 3 hrs 44 mins.

If you have any pledges still to collect, kindly do so as soon as possible.

SAVE THE DATE: next year's bike-a-thon event will be on July 12th.

Franz Gehriger commented on his team, Swiss Mafia, was made up of 90% newcomers to the event this year. It was good getting to know new people who are as excited about the work Rotary is doing. Also of note: Harrison Hot Springs is the BEST finish location. A sentiment echoed by many.

The Bike-a-thon organizing committee has jerseys available for any wanting them. Cost is $70, various sizes available. Let them know if you'd like one. Note there is no date on them so can be used year after year and they are really nice!

  • Gerry Glazier let everyone know the the annual Rib-Fest put on by the Port Moody Rotary Club is this weekend, July 20 & 21, at the Rocky Point Park in Port Moody. This event is a fun one for everyone with 5 different rib vendors, entertainment, and for those over 19, a beer tent. Note for all: if you sit in the beer tent servers will take your rib orders and bring it to you, versus you having to stand in the lines.

  • Tom Crean has the hard copies of the Rotary cartoons drawn by Graham Harrop. If you'd like copies let Tom know and he'll get it sorted. Note: soft copies are also available, CLICK HERE.

  • Fred West let us know that we will have the Hon. Jonathon Wilkinson, MP Minister of Fisheries, Oceans & Canadian Coast Guard as our guest speaker on August 6th. We are pleased to have a federal minister attend our lunch. Should you want to bring guests, please let Carolyn know well in advance so that the Terminal City Club can be adequately prepared.

  • Michael Woolnough just back from 6 weeks in Germany. Had a wonderful time at the RI Convention in Hamburg where there were approximately 25,000 Rotarians. He was able to meet Rotarians from Tanzania with whom the ISC will be doing work in the near future. Highly recommends anyone and everyone who can attend a RI convention to do so. The experience and connections you make are fantastic.

He was happy to report that he & Jane came back to a new grand baby. Congratulations!

  • Jenifer Brousseau has been working with MP Jenny Kwan to promote the Beneath the Surface suicide prevention program to the provincial and federal governments. It looks like the program will be included in the federal government's national strategy for suicide prevention. Exciting! Jenifer will be leaving town for some time to work on film projects related to issues around the missing and murdered indigenous women.

  • Nick Blom let us know of the passing of past member Brian Cooper. He was a member of our club for over 15 years (1993-2010). See above for information about his memorial service to be held on Monday July 29th.

  • Don McPhee and his wife, Shirley, are great grandparents 2nd time over. Congratulations!

  • Katherine Copeland invited all to support the upcoming barbeque to be held on Saturday August 17th at the Trev Deeley motorcycle dealership. The barbeque is being put on by the 2020 Red Carpet Gala committee and is being generously sponsored by one of Katherine's BACA friends who owns the FEAST - The Neighbourhood Table restaurant in West Vancouver.

Meeting adjourned with a toast to all those who organized, volunteered, rode, supported, and cheered on the 2019 bike-a-thon.
