Program - SPEAKER SERIES:

Valeria's story began when she was young and she worked under her father's guidance to learn and achieve greatness in the sport of snowboarding in Kazakhstan. She really began to understand the dynamics around her when she attended a World Cup competition by herself, having fallen out with her father -- her coach and until then her greatest support. She chose to stand up for what she felt was best for her and started to walk the path alone only to find, at that competition that others started rallying around her, supporting her. People she never expected to received help from. It opened her eyes to the idea that when one connects with their own strength and beliefs it will lead to success - whatever that may be.

Valeria's experience has led her to recognize three common leadership styles and what makes each successful in their own right.

Managers
  • Exploiters and workers
  • They look to the past, comparing past experiences to build current/future ones
  • Examples can be found in sports and military (win & beat at any cost), 100% obedience is required
  • VALUES
    • Structured and predictable
    • Order and subordination is necessary
    • Examples: Pharaos, monarchs, religion who all use fear to control
  • COMMUNITY OF
    • Workers who obey
    • The leader is interested in the goal and the outcome exclusively
  • MOTIVATION STYLE
    • Fear and pressure
Inspirers
  • Start-ups and visionaries
  • They look to the future with hope and dreams
  • Examples can be found mostly with young generations, new sports (such as VR)
  • They are driven by the idea that sport is available anytime, anywhere
  • VALUES
    • Bright future, grand ideas, infectious optimism
    • Innovators, fanatics, so called leaders of empires who may be missing some of the building blocks.
    • They are driven by vision, though most often are not able to stick through extreme roadblocks for ultimate success.
  • COMMUNITY OF
    • Adventurers willing to take risks and believe in the dream.
    • The leader is interested in the idea and potential possibilities.
  • MOTIVATION STYLE
    • A promise of change and a better future
Mentors
  • Teachers and students
  • Willing to travel a path, no goal, renewal, looking at all – the past, the present, and then to the future, to plan
  • Examples can be found everywhere including sports, education, industry.
  • VALUES
    • Building block of the new, with a willingness and desire to explore, learn and change
    • Examples are some priests, philosophers, teachers, masters
    • Through their support of others and their balance views, they are able to acquire a whole community of supporters around them, thus propelling forward
  • COMMUNITY OF
    • Students wanting to learn
    • The leader is interested in students as an observer, learning from the process versus focussing only on the outcomes
  • MOTIVATION STYLE
    • Encouraging a search for non-conventional knowledge and deeper understanding to work forward towards success
In closing, if you have the correct spirit and beliefs to guide you, others will rally around you, willing to travel with you. Wake up your own spirit and lead with purpose.

The following words, written by Valeria on her blog, sums up nicely how her thinking changed from being purely an athlete in pursuit of a medal to recognizing that the journey to get there and then beyond the Olympics has been so much more valuable and fulfilling. It explains how her perceptions were altered.

I thought I failed

I thought I failed because athletes are only judged by the medals.

I thought I failed because I measured myself by the medals.

I thought I failed because the culture says only the winner is remembered.

I missed that I was the first-ever athlete representing Kazakhstan at the Olympics in snowboarding.

I missed the fact that I pioneered a sport as a female athlete in a patriarchal culture.

I missed that my dad and I raised a whole sport from the ground up.

I missed the fact that I was changing people's perception of Kazakhstan, who only knew it from Borat before.

I missed that for an athlete, on average, it takes ten years to get to the Olympics, and I’ve done it in 8 years.

I missed all those people along the way, who’d let me train in Europe for free, who’d fit me into the training schedule without reservations, since we never knew until the last minute if we make the training camp or not, all those people who’d helped me by chance, whether letting me go onto the chair lift skipping the line so I can make the competition, or a Police officer in Austria, who’d negotiate a training hill on my behalf and hundreds more instances.

I missed that I rose from a hill of 0.5 miles and a secondhand snowboard to become an Olympian.

I missed that I was the first athlete in Kazakhstan who had her website done and was writing a blog in 2 languages.

I missed that I was the first Kazakhstani that Swiss manufacturer Kessler was doing custom boards for.

I missed that I was first all along.

I missed my self-worth in a race for a medal when the real race was right in front of me all those years.

I won my race, for which there’s no title, no medal, no certificate.

But it is my experience, my story, my journey, and I own it.

Meeting adjourned with a toast to finding your spirit.
