Sarah Reppchen, Cluster Leader Financial Services Western Canada -- Risk Advisory at Deloitte, Canada
The Future of Risk for Canadian Credit Unions, and What Does this Mean for Me as a Consumer?

These are interesting times for Canadian credit unions and the current landscape presents both imminent and emerging risks. The risks can be clustered into the following 4 areas: 1) Increased competition through alternative payment solutions and new market participants, who put traditional business models under pressure. 2) Regulatory changes are on the horizon which can cause significant implications for business models and the increasing cost of compliance cause additional burden on profitability. 3) The public expects financial institutions to address latest issues in detected misconduct of financial institutions through a more rigorous risk culture and enhanced consumer protection. Finally, Government is alert given latest findings from reports concerning Financial Crime and Money Laundering in B.C. and on a global scale.

A review of how these imminent and emerging risks can affect the Credit Unions, the Credit Union System and the consumer will be shared with some interesting perspectives of downsides as well as upsides and the respective opportunities which consumers may expect as a result from this changing environment.

Sarah is leading Financial Services for Deloitte’s Risk Advisory practice in Western Canada. She is responsible for supporting Financial Institutions across Western Canada managing the Regulatory and Risk Management challenges, especially Operational Risk creates one of the most imminent challenges.

JOINT ROTARACT-ROTARY MEETING

Joan Posivy, Rotaract Liaison, chaired the meeting.

The joint meeting was held at the Creekside Community Centre in the Olympic Village.
Four divisions of our Club presented updates on their activities:
  1. Young Professionals Rotaract Club, presented by President, Anton Perepelytsia.
  2. UBC Rotaract Club, presented by President, Fey Hung.
  3. Rotary Club of Vancouver, presented by President Elect, Gerry Glazier
  4. Rotary Club of Vancouver – Young Professionals Division, presented by Chair, Scott Stroshin.
Special presentation:
  • Assistant District Governor, John Bathurst, presented Thomas Miller with a Paul Harris Award.
A goal for the evening was set: come up with a project that would include all divisions, Rotaract clubs and Rotary Club. The parameters: it is to take place in March, and is inclusive. Smaller groups brainstormed and then chose their top two suggestions. The list of all groups top two made up the short list which was voted on by the whole room. The list included suggestions to clean up an outdoor area, a talent show, work at the Strathcona food bank, and many more fantastic ideas, both fun and practical.
The “winner” that received the most votes was a bowling tournament. An organizing committee was struck:
  • Representing the Young Professionals Rotaract Club, Alysa Huppler-Poliak
  • Representing the UBC Rotaract Club, Fey Hung
  • Representing the Rotary Club of Vancouver, William Brunke
  • Representing the Rotary Club of Vancouver – YP Division, Scott Stroshin
The event is to take place in March to ensure it doesn’t interfere with the UBC Rotaractors exam schedule in April. Once the details have been worked out everyone will receive more information about how to participate.

Thank you to those who attended and thank you to Joan Posivy, Fey Hung, and Anton Perepelytsia for running a great meeting with a concrete and fun outcome.

Following up on last week's toast: "Meeting adjourned with a toast to at least coming up with a plan to do something.", we have a plan to do something, a concrete plan!
