Weekly Program:
Thriving Beyond Work: Embracing Health, Purpose, and Community
Todayâs Rotary session explored the vital topic of life and well-being after retirement. Sandra Lowe moderated a panel of expert insights and real-life advice, the conversation focused on how to thrive beyond a professional career by rediscovering purpose, prioritizing health, and building meaningful community connections.
Carl Zheng, Celebrity Trainer & High-Performance Coach
Key Themes:
Rediscovering Purpose After Work
Purpose is the alignment of your beliefs, strengths, and passionsâwho you are, what youâre good at, and what brings you joy.
It's made up of both personal and professional goals and interestsâincluding hobbies, volunteer work, and natural strengths.
Mental health and basic needs must be in place first; clarity comes when internal and external values align.
Donât wait for retirement to start thinking about your purposeâit should evolve long before your final day on the job.
Maintaining Physical & Mental Well-Being
Western health focus: move often, eat well, surround yourself with positive people.
Eastern perspective: prioritize sleep and mood for holistic well-being.
Reducing stressâboth internal and externalâis essential. Mental health is foundational to overall health.
Keep growing: challenge yourself, set new goals, and nurture both new and existing relationships.
Connection & Community Matter
Relationships that allow you to be your true self are the most fulfilling.
The healthiest approach is to balance time between deepening old relationships and forming new ones.
Final Reflections
Many people âfillâ their time post-retirement, but forget to âfulfillâ it.
True thriving comes from living with purpose, joy, and authentic connections.
Culturally, some delay joy for post-retirement. This conversation encouraged starting nowâdonât wait to begin living meaningfully.
The session was engaging, practical, and filled with wisdom for anyone approaching or navigating life beyond work.
Questions from the Audience
âAre you retiring into something or out of something?â
â A powerful mindset shift. Consider retirement as a transition toward new purpose, not just an escape from the workplace.
âLook at retirement as a beginning, not an end.â
â This perspective helps unlock opportunity, growth, and exploration in the next chapter.
Question to Carl: "How do you coach clients to shift their mood?"
- Use power poses (like the superhero pose) to reduce cortisol and boost confidence.
- Limit screen time and alcohol intakeâboth can affect emotional regulation.
Morning routine tips?
- Start the day with meditation, not your phone. Set a positive tone before outside distractions take over.
How do you adjust when suddenly spending full days with your partner after years apart at work? - âHonor what is, eliminate the should's.â Accept that you may not always alignâwhat matters is open communication and respect for differences.
Thanks to moderator Sandra Lowe, who guided the conversation with insight and grace.
The meeting was adjourned with the following toast:
"Living our best lives - mentally, physically, spiritually - now and into retirement"
