The Rotary Vocational Training Team needs help with homestays for 12 teachers coming in from Kenya December 9th to 13th (a short stay) They are also asking for help with transportation needs during that time. You can contact John Bathurst for more info.
The 41st annual mixed curling weekend is this coming weekend, November 8th-10th in Squamish. Myron Kuzych let us know that as of Tuesday there were 21 registered; they really need 24. Non-Rotarians are welcome. We wish all participants a fun-filled weekend.

Gerry Glazier made an appeal for volunteers for the 1st stint at the Union Gospel Mission. Please contact Gerry for more information.
John Hayto made an appeal for a homestay for our Exchange Student, Mar, starting in February. Mar is currently staying with John but as is customary, it is recommended that she have different family experiences while she is here. Ideally, the next homestay will be closer to her school, Sir Winston Churchill Secondary (she travels approx.. 1-hr each way now). Homestays do receive some compensation to offset any costs. Please contact John for more info.
John Hayto let everyone know that the Youth Committee is looking for an outgoing exchange student for next year (2010-21) for a 1-year overseas experience. If you know of a youth aged 15-19 who is outgoing and confident, please let the committee know.
John Bathurst is organizing Club tables at the upcoming Foundation Dinner (Nov. 16th). Looking for more people to join in. Currently there are smaller clubs with a lot more people attending – please consider attending. Let John know if you’d like to be seated at a RCoV club table or if you’d like more information.
Hon. Colonel Rod Hoffmeister invited everyone to the Remembrance Day event at the Seaforth Armoury on November 11th, 10:30 a.m. They hold a ceremony followed by a reception. Public is welcome.
Joan Posivy updated us on Young Professionals:
Franco Gallo will be the club liaison with the newly formed RCoV Young Professionals Division (for 30-40 year olds)
The Young Professionals Rotaractor club (for 18-30 year olds) is thriving; they have earned a Distinguished Rotary Citation. The date this will be presented is tbd; hopefully a number of club members will attend.
Program:
Honourable Colonel Rod Hoffmeister from the Seaforth Armoury introduced guest speaker.
Reservist, Sgt. David Scrivens. Sgt. Scrivens has seen a lot of action in his time. Remembrance Day is particularly important to him and all military personnel and their families.
Sgt. Scrivens has been an infantry soldier for 23 years. At 19 years of age he went to Yugoslavia on a peace-keeping mission; in 2008 he was sent into active war zones. Every other day during a 9-month placement he, with his comrades, was involved in active combat. This takes its toll on a person. You can trust no one – everyone in the room looks friendly but you know at least two people are there to kill you.
Canada’s military is largely land-based, with a very small navy & air force. It always available to help Canadians, whether it is at home in time of crisis such as floods, fires, etc., or abroad. They have saved countless lives, in Bosnia, Cypress, the Congo, and many other locales. They are currently the largest supplier of troupes for the U.N.
Currently we have 5,000 soldiers working on U.N. missions, including Haiti & Jamaica delivering aid after natural disasters, Congo training troupes and building wells, Iraq training troupes, Lativia, Poland, Ukraine, and in the Golan Heights acting as observation teams.
Many soldiers have perished over many years in conflict worldwide. These deaths can be measured, however, victories cannot. One cannot measure the number of lives saved by the actions of our military. Safe to say, it is an incredible number.
In closing, lets not just remember our military on this one day in one month, but every day of every month.
Meeting adjourned with a toast: They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old, age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.
