Program:
Kaz Kadono introduced our honoured guest, Consul General of Japan, Mr. Takashi Hatori.
Mr. Hatori has extensive expertise in the area of Korean and Japanese relations having worked as First Secretary and subsequently as Minister of Ecomonic Affairs at the Embassy of Japan in Korea.
He provided some history and context for the attitudes between the two cultures. Some of the relevant dates are below.
after the 3rd century b.c. - knowledge transmission from Asia via Korea to Japan
in the 13th century - invasion by the Mogol Empire
in the 16th century - invasion by Japanese forces
1910-1945 - annexation of Korea by Japan
1965 - establishment of diplomatic relationship between Japan and Korea
2015 - confirmation by governments of Japan (GOJ) and the Republic of Korea (ROK) regarding Comfort Women
2018 - ROK's Supreme Court ordered Japanese companies to pay consolation money
2019 (July) - GOJ's update of export control measures related to ROK
2019 (August) - ROK's decision to terminate the General Security of Military Agreement
The relationship between the two countries has been difficult after Japan invaded Korea. Memory is long. The current heart of the problem is whether the agreements made in 1965 will be upheld.
As with many peoples who have suffered at the hands of others, Koreans wish for the Japanese to be mindful of history. Not necessarily to continue apologizing for it, but to be informed and sympathetic for the pains caused to the Korean people at the hands of Japan. It is hopeful that Koreans and Japanese will be able to live side-by-side in peace as they do here in Vancouver.
