After travelling for Rotary and volunteering in the Dominican Republic for the last 14-15 years, Sandra has decided on a change. She will be heading to Nicaragua with the RC Stratford, Ontario. Our club has generously provided support for the eco-stove project they will be working on.
Laura Donnellan shared that they had a great Thanksgiving weekend at some of their pubs. They hosted the Irish rugby team, together with the Canadian, English, and French teams. Fun celebrations had by all.
Program:
Member spotlight - Laura Donnellan
Laura, together with William, moved from western Ireland in April 2009 not long before the Olympics. They came on a 1-year work and visit visa. Lo and behold, they are still here. About 12 years ago, they opened a construction company, 7 years ago they opened their 1st Irish pub. They have just received the keys for their 7th pub location.
Laura & William have three boys, all arrived early (9-7 weeks). Those boys are the center of Laura’s life. Being present for their children is paramount. They do a lot of volunteering at their children’s school. Besides putting family 1st, Laura loves photography and taking care of their wider social circle. They have been very fortunate in how they’ve been welcomed to Vancouver and now ensure they focus on inter-generational relationships, whether by blood or by choice.
18 months ago, Laura started the New or Not So New to Vancouver gatherings. They are held the last Wed of each month, usually have about 80 guests with 18 leaders from all different areas. The events are open to everyone and are free. If you are interested in being a team lead contact Laura for more info.

Membership issues - mentorship
Parisa Adrangi, membership committee co-chair, spoke about our updated mentorship program. She began with highlighting the three areas of focus for the membership committee: (1) recruiting & induction, (2) onboarding & mentorship, and (3) engagement & retention. Today she focused on the mentorship piece. It is well recognized within Rotary, club success is measured by members who stay on past the one-year mark. Mentorship is key.
Mentorship involves a few steps over a period of time: (1) get to know the new member identifying areas of interest and personal importance, (2) teaching about Rotary values and Rotary in general, (3) facilitating networking opportunities, and finally (4) providing continued support for club engagement.
Parisa then went into more detail of how the program works and what is expected from our mentors. CLICK HERE to view Parisa's PowerPoint presentation laying out a 12-month program.
In closing, we need mentors! Who is the ideal mentor? Is it you? Examples would be past presidents, past secretaries, past or current committee chairs, long-time members of all sorts who can bring their Rotary & club knowledge to the table. Though it is preferred to have volunteers step up, you can be sure if you are an experienced Rotarian, you will be voluntold. :o)
If you are interested in becoming a mentor, reach out to Parisa or Franz.
Meeting adjourned with a toast by President Elect Joan Posivy:
