Ken McCance & David Hoag, World Bicycle Relief Canada Bikes for Girls: Changing the World, One Bike at a Time
The Bikes for Girls team is focused on raising funds to provide World Bicycle Relief (WBR) Buffalo bikes to girls living in remote African villages so that they can make the long journey to school. Independent research shows that girls with bikes have better attendance, get better grades, especially in math, and are more likely to graduate from high school. The lives of individuals, families, and communities are profoundly improved by each bike. A bike creates a story of impact – the freedom, power, and joy to overcome distance and time to achieve a better education, care for a sick loved one, and improve a household's resilience. By combining world-class product development, measured community-led mobility programs, and a growing social enterprise WBR provides cost-effective long-term sustainable benefits by providing, so far, 1350 girls with bikes, for only $205/bike.
David Hoag, a graduate of medicine from the University of Western Ontario, serves as Chief of Family Practice at Peterborough Regional Hospital. He leads medical teams in Nepal, volunteers with Hospice Peterborough, and has dedicated 14 years to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice in Vancouver. Additionally, he contributes to humanitarian efforts with World Bicycle Relief in Vancouver.
Ken McCance, a retired Professional Engineer/MBA, has had more than 30 years of experience in the project/general management and sales of international industrial and software projects. Ken's career included extensive hands-on experience in consulting engineering from detailed engineering design to business group and executive management. He managed or contributed to projects in pulp and paper, mining, defense, energy, financial systems, oil refineries, e-business, and transportation. In his retirement, Ken has volunteered his expertise to local and international charities.

Sean Chan was welcomed back as a member of the club after taking a hiatus for a couple of years. We look forward to your participation Sean.
Joan Posivy let us know that after many years being in the role of the Young Professionals Rotaract Club liaison, she is passing the torch to Mindy Tulsi-Ingram. The VYP Rotaract Club has recently amended its bylaws. They have included as one of the requirements to be a full member is to participate in a Rotary event. Hopefully we, as a Rotary Club, will do the same -- participate in Rotaract events. A saying that is very apt was shared: We’re in the forest, all the trees are the individual clubs, and though separate they (we) are all connected through our roots.
We are still looking for a liaison for the UBC Rotaract Club. If interested email youth@rotaryvancouver.org.
Franz Gehriger reported that the Irish Pub Night Social last week was a great success. Many thanks to the Donnellan team for hosting.
Franz promoted the July Ride for Hearing. They are looking for more team registrations. The Swiss team is challenging others... perhaps an Irish team?. Rene Fluri has donated 10 copies of his book about his life's fantastic journey with a request that a $50 donation to the Ride for Hearing be made per copy.
John Hayto & Paul Martin promoted the upcoming President's Gala Dinner, Back to Black. It will be a black tie optional event on Friday May 24th at the Terminal City Club, cost per person $125. An Eventbrite invitation has been sent to everyone - check your inbox. Else you can click on the poster above to buy your tickets.
Sponsorships for the event are being sought to help with the costs. Looking for $125 sponsorships that can be put against the cost of music, photobooth, drinks, etc. You choose. Sponsors will be recognized up to and at the event. Reach out to Paul or John if you are interested.
Nathan Hesketh promoted the hoop-a-thon April 20th. They have recruited a ringer, Steve Ingram (Mindy Tulsi-Ingram's spouse). Pledge sheets are provided at our lunch meetings. An email has been sent to everyone with more info and the links to donate. All funds raised go to help the youth of Britannia and Strathcona, including the Girl Who Leap & Boys Who Rise programs.
Bill Schulz let us know that Tom Crean has been at St. Paul's Hospital for some time, and recently had a foot amputated. He will be moving to a rehab centre for continued treatment.
Program - CLUB DAY:
A special club day it was, celebrating our Honorary members. These members have contributed in countless ways over the years, usually to no fanfare or recognition. That said, the work done was not unnoticed and we appreciate everything that has helped our club become what it is - a strong, ongoing Rotary Club.
