Ajit Johal,
Clinical Instructor UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences; CEO NL Medication Management and TravelRx Education Inc.

15 Minutes Could Save Your Life

Ajit has been providing immunizations and clinical education since 2012. As a community pharmacist, he is an accessible provider of immunizations to patients in the community. In 2018, he started an organization called immunize.io, with a mission statement of "taking our best shot at immunizing the world". As a BC registered non-profit, the Immunize.io Health Association works locally to improve education and access to vaccinations, while donating proceeds to improving immunization rates in underdeveloped countries.  Through "immunize.io" he has worked with numerous organizations and communities to address “vaccine hesitancy” and improve access to vaccinations globally. Ajit is also a clinical instructor for the University of British Columbia Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences Program. At UBC he coordinates elective courses for UBC Pharmacy students, one of which focuses on vaccinations and “gaps in immunization”.

Ajit graduated from the University of Toronto Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy in 2012.  He has been practicing travel health since 2013, and obtained his CTH (Certificate in Travel Health) in 2014. He is also a certified diabetic educator, and has extensive experience working with patients with complex medication regimens.  He is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to Travel Health and Chronic Disease Management.

Upcoming meeting: Tuesday August 20, 2019
David Dickson, Retired Vancouver Police Officer
How to be more effective helping Vancouver's Downtown East Side

Dave has received a number of awards and commendations recognizing his work over the years supporting youth and at-risk women. He retired from the Vancouver police force in 2003 after a 28-year career with them having started working in Vancouver's East Side in 1980. Mr. Dickson now works for a social service agency in the neighbourhood and keeps in touch with local sex trade workers, at least one of whom he knows began working at the age of 10. In all these years not much has changed. The area has many valuable services available but is still lacking in proper longtime treatment services. It is through education of why people populate the east side that a better understanding will proliferate, and a growth in empathy and support along with it.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Thanks to Peter Clarke

"Try not to become a person of success but rather try to become a person of value. One is considered successful in our day who gets more out of life than they put in. But a person of value will give more than they receive."

- Albert Einstein

VALUE OF ROTARY VOLUNTEERING

A special report prepared for Rotary International by the Johns Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies estimated the value of Rotary member volunteer hours at $850 million a year.

That Rotary members log a lot of volunteer hours should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with the organization. But a new report just released by Johns Hopkins University provides a powerful look at the impact of all those volunteer hours.

The special report prepared for Rotary International by the Johns Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies found that Rotary members had volunteered a total of 5.8 million hours within a four-week survey period. Extrapolating those results over an entire year, the report gave a conservative estimate of nearly 47 million hours of volunteer effort generated by Rotary members in a typical year.

The report then analyzed the economic impact of all those hours and estimated the value conservatively at $850 million a year, if communities had to pay for the services that Rotary volunteers provide.

Rotary, with the help of Johns Hopkins University, is the first global service organization to conduct an empirical analysis of its volunteer’s impact using an internationally sanctioned definition of volunteer work. The authors of the report noted in their conclusion that at each stop, the analysis had chosen the most conservative estimates.

“This makes the results reported here all the more remarkable,” the authors noted. “Translated into economic terms, Rotary is annually generating a scale of social and economic problem-solving effort that is worth nearly nine times more than it costs the organization to produce.”

Rotary General Secretary John Hewko said the figure doesn't even include the in-kind contributions and the money that Rotary clubs and the Rotary Foundation raise every year. In addition, the figure doesn’t include the volunteer work of the many relatives and friends of Rotary that members often involve in a project, or that of members of Rotaract, Interact, or the Community Corps, that would easily double the estimate of Rotary’s economic impact.

Program:
Bill Davidson introduced this week’s guest speaker, the Honourable Jonathon Wilkinson, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and Coast Guard.

After acknowledging us meeting on the unceded territories of the Musqueum and Coast Salish peoples, Minister Wilkinson shared that he decided to go into politics in 2015 because of his concerns as a parent for climate change and also he believed that there could be a more thoughtful economic strategic approach than what was being implemented at the time.

He did extole the accomplishments of the Liberal party in their time of office including:
  • since 2015 the economy has rebounded; Canadians have created over a million new jobs, the majority of which are full-time
  • continuing to work on strengthening the economy for now and the future
  • focussed on trade as the centre piece of the economic strategy; Canada is the only country with free trade agreements with the Americas, Asia and the European Union
  • the middle class has benefited and improved their lot through initiatives like the Canada job benefit
  • working on the economy of the future by challenging the private sector to identify areas where we as a country can succeed -- a supercluster approach
An example of the latter point is that the federal government has invested $950 million to support industry-led superclusters such as the ocean supercluster on the east coast (CLICK HERE for info), and the digital supercluster here in British Columbia (CLICK HERE for info).

Climate change is an existential threat to our world. Clean technology is required to mitigate the issue. A real effective, efficient plan is necessary. The federal government set up a foundation, the Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC), to support the research and development of new environmental technologies that address climate change, clean air, clean water and clean soil. One such company to benefit is the Burnaby based General Fusion Inc. (CLICK HERE for info).

The changes to our world is hugely concerning. It has been reported that due to human effects we have lost 60% of the world's biodiversity. There must be an economic strategy to account for these issues.

Minister Wilkinson asked that when considering any potential Prime Minister in the upcoming October election, find out exactly what their economic plan is. It is imperative for us all and the world we live in that addressing climate change is a central piece of the puzzle.
