Program:
Brian Street introduced this week’s guest speaker, Thomas Reppken, who spoke about his escape from East Germany before the wall came down.
Thomas was 19 years old when he and a friend decided to leave East Germany in October of 1989. In heavy rain they made the trip, were allowed to pass through the border to start a new life adventure. The trip was one filled with anxiety but all turned out well in the end, thankfully. The experience is one that is still brings out strong emotions for Thomas but he regrets nothing.
The wall came down a month later and a year later Germany united. When you visit the country you can still see bits of the wall and you can certainly still feel the pain and anxiety when you talk to people who lived through the times of a divided Germany.
Thomas is currently awaiting approval for permanent residency status in Canada. He and his wife, Sarah (Canadian born), have decided to settle in Vancouver and have both applied to be members of our Club.
Thomas would be happy to chat with you, should you have any questions about his journey, or want to talk about your own experiences.
