Next week's meeting, Tuesday August 20, 2024, will feature Darren Dahl, the Dean of the UBC Sauder School of Business and the innovate BC Professor in Marketing and Behavioural Science. With over 20 years at UBC, Darren has held various leadership roles, including Director of the Robert H. Lee Graduate School. His research interests encompass new product development, creativity, emotions in consumption contexts, social influence, and social marketing. Darren has earned several accolades, such as the Killam Research Award and the 3M Teaching Fellowship, recognizing his contributions to both academia and student development.

Tuesday September 10, 2024 Featured Speaker: Arthur Griffiths

Arthur is a very proud Canadian (born and raised) and businessperson, a true entrepreneur and devoted philanthropist, following in the reputation and footsteps of the Griffiths Family legacy.
He is the former owner of the Vancouver Canucks and Vancouver Grizzlies. He also financed, built and owned General Motors Place (now Rogers Arena). During the Arena construction phase, we were awarded an NBA expansion franchise, Vancouver Grizzlies. In the late 1990’s, he chaired the Vancouver/ Whistler Bid Society to bring the 2010 Winter and Paralympic games to Vancouver/Whistler.
He was taught by the great examples from my parent’s legendary business career that it’s very important to give back to your community. In 1995, as one of the founding members opened the first free-standing hospice for children and their families in North America, Canuck Place.
Our club will be honoured to present Arthur Griffiths with a Paul Harris Fellowship Award in recognition of the exceptional contributions Arthur has given to the betterment of our society. This award is named after the esteemed founder of Rotary Club International, Paul Harris, and represents the highest form of recognition a Rotary Club can bestow.

Welcome to our guests, new and returning, as well as our own members who have taken time out of busy schedules to attend. We are grateful to see new faces, remember guests are ALWAYS welcome at our meetings.
We had an amazing grand total of 25 guests join us this week!

Adriana Zylmans and Dr. Michael Woolnough gave an update of the work and engagements of this year's International Service Committee.
The committee has an annual budget amount of $45K to disburse and they receive and review funding requests all year long.
Anyone with a passion to make a difference in the lives of people in underdeveloped counties, who is willing to travel to make this difference, who is open to spend time on weekends to work on the international support projects, who is open to attend the international conferences and simply - anyone who cares to help.... locally and globally - is the perfect fit for the committee.

Among others, this past year, the few following initiatives and projects have been supported by the RCoV:
- Sandra Lowe and the Rotary Club of Stratford: COMMIT (Canadian Outreach Medical and Mission Team) - Building Stoves in Nicaragua to ensure clean and healthy dining environments.
- RCoV and Tsawwassen Rotary Club: WASH Project in Uganda to ensure hygiene for children and their families in Uganda.
- RCoV and the RC of Bahari - "Giving the Gift of Education" by building 1000 desks for schools in Tanzania. In return for this effort, the local community planted 1000 local plants to acknowledge the many trees that were used to build the desks.
- OTHER PROJECTS WERE: the School Dental Program in Cambodia, the UBC Nepal Adolescent Health Program in Nepal, the SHELTERBOX Program in Turkey & Syria, the Loading-a-Container to Guatemala Initiative, the World Bicycle Relief to provide girls in Uganda with bikes, the "Fundus Retinal Camera" equipment in Thailand and the Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery support project, led by Dr. Michael Woolnough.
We are excited for the causes and projects we will support this year.
Program:
"Bring Back The Sounds of Life" - What a beautiful opening to the summary report of the "Ride for Hearing" event 2024.
Chair Franz Gehriger thanked all the riders, volunteers, sponsors (of whom many were in the room to celebrate the events' success), Paul Dragan - Owner of Reckless Bike Stores in Yaletown and many other supporters for the continued engagement and investment in the annual Rotary "Ride of Hearing" event.
There were 149 riders, and 25 additional family riders, who all raised an astounding total of $152,317.29 - a 31% increase from the ride in 2023. Kudos and thank you to all participants and supporters!
The "Ride for Hearing" Event started on July 14, 1985 with a ride to Harrison Hot Springs.
Franz mentioned and thanked the founders of the Rotary Bike Ride Foundation, as well as Ally Potel; Rotary member and Event Planner, who took on this year's lead on the event.
Although Ally has never organized this ride before, her expertise and professionalism did not disappoint! Thank you Ally!
Phil Webber announced this year's awards winners:
Winner of the Ed Fisk Memorial Team Cup, which honors the late Ed Fisk, one of the founders of the Rotary Ride for Hearing over 39 years ago. This trophy is awarded to the fundraising team which raises the most funds. Like last year, the winning team is the Chain Reaction Team which is chaired by Barbara Welch.
Barbara and the members of her team raised approximately $35,000.
The Don Waters Memorial Plaque is awarded to an individual for outstanding contribution to the current Rotary Ride for Hearing.
The late Donald Charles Alexander (Don) Waters, born June 27, 1940, passed away
peacefully at home on August 29, 2017 following his diagnosis with and the subsequent progression of ALS. Don is remembered for being totally dependable in contributing ideas, for saying what he could do, and for doing what he undertook to do. Over many many years, Don recruited sponsors for the Rotary Ride for Hearing, then called the Bike-A-Thon. Additionally, Don personally raised so much in donations each year that he was perennially in the top echelon of the funds raised by individual riders through soliciting donations.
Don always eschewed the limelight, but in his own quiet way got things done, made a difference, and was recognized by his fellow Club members for doing so. It is fitting that Barbara Welch, who similarly eschews the limelight, is again the winner of the Don Waters Memorial Plaque.
Barbara has set the individual standard for soliciting donations for the purpose of “Bringing Back the Sounds of Life” to the deaf and hard of hearing.
We would like to thank you Barbara for leading her team and all riders and Club fundraisers in the solicitation of individual donations.
In so doing, Barbara has inspired us all to do more.
The winner of the Corporate Challenge Cup is yet to be determined.
The Corporate Challenge Cup competition winner is the corporate team, consisting of
a maximum of 9 qualifying members, and a minimum of 4 qualifying members,
which has the lowest net time based on the finishing time of the team’s fourth
fastest qualifying member. The winning team will be announces shortly!
The meeting concluded with a brief presentation from Glynnis Tidball from St. Paul's Hospital.
Glynnis is a registered audiologist with more than twenty years experience in public health. She is a clinical lecturer at the UBC School of Audiology and Speech Sciences and UBC Otolaryngology program (academic rounds). Specialized areas of her practice include tinnitus and hyperacusis, cochlear implants, and diagnostic audiology.
She filled us in on all the plans St. Paul's has with the generous donation from the Ride of Hearing and expressed her sincerest thanks to our club, its members and all other supporters for the continued support over the decades.
