Inspiring Brave Actions

Our newest Rotary member, Rumana Monzur, speaks at the Get Inspired Talks on October 19.  The afternoon event will be held between 2 and 5 PM at the Queen Elizabeth Playhouse, 600 Hamilton Street, Vancouver.

Get Inspired Talks ("GI Talks") are a series of inspiring short talks that rally people to help themselves and others by tackling humanity’s pressing problems. GI Talks are designed to inspire listeners to see beyond their self-interest and realize that they can make a difference to humanity.

Rumana, a University Professor, was cruelly attacked by her husband and blinded. From her darkness grew the conviction that hope overcomes our limiting beliefs. Rumana now guides people to believe in the infinite power of possibilities and thus embrace hope.

In Rumana's words:
It’s a huge honour for me to be part of this event and be able to share my important message with the world. It would mean a lot to me if you could be there. Your Afternoon Ticket costs $47 + GST. You’ll get a transformative experience featuring 6 inspiring short talks offering fresh solutions to several of humanity’s pressing problems. We’ll share a memorable afternoon together in VIP seats in the Playhouse Theatre on Saturday, October 19.

Buy your Afternoon Ticket(s) online by clicking this link - Rumana's VIP group . It’s REALLY important that you use this link to buy your ticket(s) because when you do the event organizers know to seat you in my reserved section of VIP seats. Be sure to buy an Afternoon Ticket(s). I’ll send you an auditorium seat map that shows where our group is sitting.

Please join me. Together we’ll make fond memories and be informed, inspired and activated to move the needle toward a better world.

Warm regards,
Rumana

THE CONCEPT OF VOCATIONAL SERVICE

The concept of vocational service is rooted in Rotary's second object (High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society), which calls on Rotarians to encourage and foster:
  • High ethical standards in business and professions
  • The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations
  • The dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society

As a Rotarian, how can you put these ideals into action? Consider these suggestions:
  • Talk about your profession in your club, and take time to learn about fellow members’ occupations. Let our Networking Committee know if you are interested in making a presentation at an upcoming meeting.
  • Use your skills and expertise to serve a community.
  • Practice your profession with integrity, and inspire others to behave ethically through your words and actions.
  • Help young people achieve their career goals.
  • Guide and encourage others in their professional development.

By undertaking these activities, you bring vocational service to life. Vocational service is the essence of Rotary and serves as the foundation from which we serve our communities around the world.

Last Meeting October 8, 2019

This meeting was a joint event with the Canadian Club Vancouver.
Bill Davidson, President, together with Ray Greenwood, President of the Canadian Club, chaired the meeting.
Kayo Otake accompanied us on the piano for the singing of O Canada.

Though there were no announcements this week due to the nature of the event, we still want to acknowledge the special dates for the week (all will be announced at next week's meeting, October 15th)
  • birthdays: Milton Kiang Oct 9th, Martin Paul Oct 13th
  • member anniversaries: none this week
  • wedding anniversaries: Curt & Ingeborg Haase 55 years Oct 12th, Tremayne & Margaret Perry 66 years Oct 9th

Program:
Rick Antonson was introduced as the guest speaker. Rick Antonson was president and CEO of Tourism Vancouver, during which time he worked hard at building Vancouver tourism. He left that role in 2013 and is is now a full-time author having written several books including travel memoirs To Timbuktu for a Haircut, Full Moon Over Noah's Ark, and Route 66 Still Kicks.  He entwines travel, history, and memoir in books about extraordinary places, the lands around them, and the people who call them home.

His presentation, and book launch for his latest, Walking with Ghosts in Papua New Guinea, was engaging and entertaining. He spoke of how the change for him was moving from the fast-paced, highly organized, corporate world to that of a full time writer. His enthusiasm for life and the people living on our globe was very evident. As he said, "Who can resist serendipity? Surely not a traveller."

Rick spoke about the trip that he wrote about in this latest book -- how challenging and fascinating it was. An interesting fact: there are 6,400 living languages int he world, 834 of them are in Papua New Guinea. They have 0.1% of the world's population but 12% of the world's languages. It is a remarkable place with fantastic diving spots and beautiful landscapes. Worthy of a visit for everyone.

You can get a copy of Rick's book(s) at  your local Chapters or Indigo store, or through Amazon.

In closing, Rick encouraged everyone to travel. It is a wonderful way to break down barriers and celebrate humanity's differences.

Meeting adjourned with a toast to a more interesting life through more interesting travel.
