CHANGED LOCATION TO Pinnacle Harbourfront Hotel
Kick off the Holidays with a Club Social

The Terminal City Club does not have room for us for this meeting, hence moving to the Pinnacle Harbourfront Hotel (1133 W Hastings St, Vancouver, BC V6E 3T3).

It's a great opportunity for us all to check out the venue where the 2020 District 5040 Conference will be located. Time is as normal, 12 noon - 1:30 p.m. Our regular lunch fees apply:  no fee for pre-paid members; $49.50 paid at the door for pay-as-you-go and guests.

Our regular meeting will be more relaxed, without a formal program. It will be a time for celebration and camaraderie. Come one, come all and share in the laughter and Rotary hospitality. Eventbrite invitations have been sent to all. We have a hard maximum of 70 attendees at the venue so reserve spots for yourself and your guests asap. We want to be sure there is plenty for all to enjoy. PLEASE REGISTER - EMAIL INVITATIONS WERE SENT TO EVERYONE, OR CONTACT CAROLYN.

Of special note:  we will be supporting a couple of very worthy giving initiatives we hope you will be able to help with:

  • Coat drive to bring warmth for those in need on Vancouver's east side.
    THE ASK:
Bring new or gently used coats, mitts, scarves & socks. The RCoV Young Professionals Division will be bringing all donations to the Union Gospel Mission for distribution. If you cannot bring your donations to the meeting, please contact Justin Emilio, Mark Zhou, or Scott Stroshin to arrange for pick up.

  • A special fundraising ask for a family who are in a difficult situation. Dad recently passed away at a work accident and has left a single mom with two special needs, autistic children. We would like to lighten her burden this Christmas by providing groceries, grocery gift certificates, as well as toys & gifts for under the tree.
    THE ASK:
Monetary donations to the Rotary Club of Vancouver. We will then pool the money for one of our members, Katherine Copeland et al, to shop and deliver our gifts to the family. Any donation, no matter how small would be appreciated.

Sandie Goldie & Jim Bronson
Reversing Global Warming: An Introduction to Project Drawdown

Sandi Goldie & Jim Bronson are from Southern Oregon. They have been leading workshops introducing the Drawdown approach to climate change for some time. The approach alters the conversation by focusing on solutions instead of problems. Reducing emissions is an opportunity rather than a burden. It is a chance to build a strong, clean and modern city with a vibrant economy fit for the 21st century, supporting a better, healthier and more prosperous society for all. The road to drawdown begins locally.

Over the past five years, Project Drawdown has brought together a qualified and diverse group of researchers from around the world to map, measure and model the 100 most substantive solutions to address climate change. The result of the study, as reported in the book Drawdown, edited by Paul Hawken, is a path forward that can roll back global warming within 30 years. According to Hawken, drawdown is that point in time when the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere begins to decline on a year-to-year basis.

The plan shows that humanity already has the means at hand. Nothing new needs to be invented, and the solutions come from a variety of sectors, including education, land use, food production, energy, transportation, building and city planning, and even the materials we use in our daily lives. In other words, there is a part to play for everybody.

We've done it again! Our club has been recognized by Rotary International - Past District Governor Darcy Long presented the 2018-19 Rotary Citation with Platinum Distinction to Past President Brian Street.

The Rotary Citation recognizes Rotary clubs that support our strategic priorities by completing certain activities. Clubs have the entire Rotary year to achieve the citation’s goals. They mush achieve at least 5 goals as set out by RI under two categories: Uniting People & Taking Action. To receive the platinum disctinction, our club achieved not just the 5 goals in each category but an additional 3 goals connecting people.

Thank you to all of our members who made this achievement possible.

Not only did our club receive recognition but so did our Young Professionals Rotaract Club. Like the club they had goals to reach -- 3 in each category plus another 3 to reach the platinum distinction. Congratulations to the Young Professionals!!

Chair's Announcements:

Secretary's announcements provided by Parisa Adrangi:
  • reminders of upcoming events/meetings (see above)
  • birthdays: Mindy Tulsi-Ingram Dec 3rd
  • member anniversaries: none this week
  • wedding anniversaries: Charles & Lucille Flavelle 64 years Dec 9th

Special announcements and members' moments:
  • Mark Startup announced to the group that he is retiring at the end of January and will be moving to Agassiz. It was just shy of 34 years ago that Gordon Esau invited Mark to participate in a curling bonspiel. He was inducted as a member of our club shortly thereafter. Mark, we wish you well but know that you will be missed!
  • Angus Campbell will be moving to Burlington Ontario and has resigned from the Board. Angus, you too shall be missed; we wish you all the best in your new home.
  • Darcy Long, past District Governor, attended the Young Professional Rotaract Club’s meeting on December 2nd. There she presented them with a Rotary Citation with platinum distinction (see above for more info). Today, December 3rd, Darcy presented our immediate past president, Brian Street, with a Rotary Citation with platinum distinction for the 2018-19 year. (see above for more info about the award). Congratulations and thank you to all the members who made it possible.
  • Anna Mandryko and Scott Stroshin were both inducted into our club. Welcome!!
  • Fey Hung, President of the UBC Rotaract Club, provided a report from the club. They have 52 members currently, with over 1,000 people who have subscribed to their newsletter. Their club has been busy with activities and fundraising; Fey gave a quick rundown on the community service and international service projects. Their latest fundraiser is a logo’d hoodie sale (see above for information). Great job to Fey and her team!
  • Joan Posivy thanked the 15 Rotarians who showed their support for the Young Professionals Rotaract club by attending their meeting on Dec. 2nd. Their presence sent a powerful message of support.
  • Jack Zaleski spoke about the organization of the 2020 bike-a-thon
    • Date confirmed for July 12th (not July 5th as was previously announced)
    • They had a successful kick-off meeting with 11 people attending
    • Most of the committees have volunteers ready to take them on, exception for 3. Please let Jack know if you are willing to chair one of the below:
      • Signage set up and take down along the route
      • Check point coordinator
      • Finish line set up and take down
    • This is Jack’s last year as chair. He has done the job for 18 years and believes the time is right to step back and let someone else take the reigns. If you are interested, talk to Jack.
  • Sandra Lowe is organizing the silent auction for the bike-a-thon. To that end, keep in mind that donations are needed – perhaps those Christmas gifts that you appreciate but don’t need so can re-gift.
  • John Hayto covered a few things:
    • He read a note received for Shelagh, who is on a youth exchange in Spain.
    • The youth committee is looking for host families for Mar, who is here on a youth exchange. If you can help, or you know of anyone who can, please contact John or Kendall.
    • The youth committee is looking for an exchange student for next year. The deadline is upon us – there must be a youth, 15-18 years of age, that one of our members know who would be a great candidate. The youth does not need to be involved in Rotary, nor does their family.
    • The youth committee is also looking for short term (STEP) exchange students aged 15-17. This exchange is a summer term; 1 month away with a host family and then 1 month here hosting an international student. Again, the candidate does not have to be connected to Rotary.
    • Save the date for the annual Whistler Weekend:  February 7-9, 2020. Already announced was the Saturday event, courtesy of Kaz Kadono, at the Bearfoot Bistro. The Friday night event will be hosted by and at Barbara Welsh’s Whistler home. If you want more info or would like to book a spot, contact John at johnhayto@gmail.com. Note spots go quickly!
  • Bill Schulz passed on greetings from Leo Allas. It is not possible for Leo to attend meetings due to health issues, but he thinks of us and wishes us all well.
  • Warm wishes of speedy recoveries to:
    • Kayo Otake who is in Japan, recovering from gall bladder surgery
    • Anne Lippert who is recovering (well we hear) from heart surgery.
    • Anne’s husband, Wolfgang, who also had heart surgery.
    • Bob Macdonald (Barb Welsh’s partner), who is recovering in Cleveland from heart surgery.
